Talk | Artist Kristen Morgin talks about her work

Morgin uses a mixture of clay, cement, and glue applied over armatures of wood and wire to create true-to-scale objects that appear to be in a late stage of decomposition. Conjuring up a post-apocalyptic vision, the Los Angeles based artist's sculptures are, however, as elegant as they are crude. Her techniques give the work exceptional complexity while avoiding the refined perfection traditionally associated with the ceramic arts. Morgin’s work has made its way into such notable collections as LACMA, UCLA’s Hammer Museum and The Rubell Collection.

Opening Reception | New Paintings by William Villalongo

Paying tribute to the ornate stylings of the Late Baroque period, Villalongo fills his canvas with frolicking maidens, nymphs and satyrs. Wooded glades, iridescent pools, and leafy bowers set the stage for what were traditionally fanciful idylls. Villalongo’s tales however take place not in the time of Louis XV’s Regence debauchery but in our own present-day equivalent. Not simply a pretty picture, they tell a tale of lust and depravity, greed and envy. Villalongo first emerged with an appearance in Frequency at the Studio Museum in Harlem followed by Greater New York at MOMA PS1. Villalongo’s work has recently been included in museum exhibitions at the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Princeton University, the University of South Florida, Tampa, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Opening Reception | Painting: Allison Stewart's Sign and Flow

A solo exhibition of oil-on-canvas works from the longtime resident of Louisiana. Stewart's work is a biologist's meditation on the region. Through sticks of graphite, layers of pigment, glazes and varnish, Stewart renders ephemeral, organic forms that haunt and hint at the history of the coastline. Black rivers and swampy vascular systems are the result of Stewart's millings through the nature of our relationship with nature: the negotiations, the neglect, the tantrums and the tenderness.

Opening Reception | Painting: Linda Lippa's Fleeting Moments

Lippa's new series of oils examines contemporary culture's state of continuous motion. She posits the notion that we have lost the ability to punctuate time, and that our individual experiences are no longer distinct, but instead blend into the miasma that is the passage of time. Juxtaposing highly rendered backgrounds with blurred subjects in the foreground, the artist conveys the sense of speed and perpetual motion that is our present day reality. Many canvases depict night scenes, providing the added drama of neon, and the luminous glow of car and street lights. Lippa's recent group exhibitions include Zimmerli Museum, New Brunswick, NJ, which acquired a painting for their collection; UBS Art Gallery, NYC; Dana Gallery, Newark, NJ; Longview Museum, Longview, TX; Belskie Museum, Closter, NJ; Traveling the Carolinas, National Association of Women Artists, NYC; Cambridge Art Association, MA; Cornell Museum, Del Ray, FL. Recent solo exhibitions include the Museo de Arte Acariqua-Araure in Venezuela; Gallery Galou, NYC; Gallery on the Vineyard, Martha's Vineyard, MA; Gallery Magritte, Tucson, AZ; Edward Williams Gallery, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and John Harms Center for the Arts, all in NJ.

Lecture | The Necessity of Madness and the Possibility of History: Reason and Power in Foucault's History of Madness

Amy Allen of Dartmouth University will present this lecture. In the preface to the 1961 edition of The History of Madness, Foucault claims that "the necessity of madness in the history of the West is linked... to the possibility of history." Allen's aim in this talk is twofold. First, she attempt to illuminate this claim by analyzing the complex relationships between madness, unreason, reason, power and history in Foucault's text. The goal here is to reconstruct the project of The History of Madness as an historical inquiry into the conditions of possibility of history itself. Second, in light of the trenchant criticisms of this aspect of The History of Madness offered by Derrida and Habermas, she'll consider whether such a project is possible, and, if so, what insights it might yield into the ambivalent relationship between power and reason.

Opening Reception | Works on Paper: Dusty Boynton's Out of Line

The artist's fifth solo show at the gallery. Boynton's new series of works on paper are rendered with exuberant, gestural zest, as she continues to delve deep into the realms of the inner child, emotional conflict, and psychology. Boynton approaches her work with a sense of immediacy, transparency, and vulnerability. As Donald Kuspit notes in his essay, "Boynton's works are as timelessly fresh as ever: the inner child remains alive and well in her art." He goes on to add that she is "a masterful colorist and gesturalist, but above all, her works are painterly drawings."

Discussion | Christianity and the Global Politics of Sexuality

This panel looks at gender, sexuality, religion, and politics. Focusing specifically on sexuality, panelists will discuss the ways in which transnational and non-governmental Christian organizations have an impact on legal and social policies in different areas where Christians may comprise a small minority or a larger percentage of the population. In addition, sexuality continues to rankle and even divide Christian churches themselves, as evidenced by the recent tensions in the Anglican Communion over LGBT clergy members. This panel will explore debates about sexuality within Christian churches and the global reach of Christian claims about sexuality. Panelists: Elizabeth Castelli, moderator, is Professor and Chair of Religion. Her most recent book is Martyrdom and Memory: Early Christian Culture Making, and she is the editor of Women, Gender, Religion: A Reader. She is a specialist in biblical studies, early Christianity, and feminist/gender studies in religion. Eng-Beng Lim is Assistant Professor of Theater at Brown University. He specializes in theater, drama and performance studies with a focus on transnational, Asian and queer issues. He has lectured widely at universities in the U.S., U.K., and Asia, and has published essays and reviews in Theatre Journal, Asian Theatre Journal, Modern Drama, and Theatre Survey. Ju Hui Judy Han is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in Geography at the University of British Columbia, and received her PhD in geography from UC Berkeley. She is currently preparing a book manuscript based on her doctoral research, which examined multiple sites of contemporary Korean/American evangelical Christian missions and the politics of mobility, humanitarianism and developmentalism. Her writings and comics have been published in Geoforum and Aether: Journal of Media Geography, and in several edited books, including Mapping the End Times: American Evangelical Imaginations. Mary-Jane Rubenstein is Assistant Professor of Religion at Wesleyan University, where she is also core faculty in the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. She is the author of Strange Wonder: The Closure of Metaphysics and the Opening of Awe, and of numerous articles and chapters on continental philosophy, negative theology, and the crisis over sex and gender in the global Anglican Communion. Jordan Alexander Stein teaches early American literature and queer theory in the department of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He recently co-edited a special issue of Early American Literature on "Methods for the Study of Religion" and his essay "Mary Rowlandson's Hunger and the Historiography of Sexuality" received honorable mention for the 2009 Norman Foerster Prize.

Author Reading | Jonathan Lippincott reads from his book Large Scale: Fabricating Sculpture in the 1960s and 1970s

Prior to the spring of 1966, if artists wanted to create works larger than their studios, they had to turn to industrial manufacturers, usually steel fabricators or boat builders, who, not surprisingly, were often unable to accommodate the creative process. The opening that spring of Lippincott, Inc. changed all that and the direction of American art in the process. Functioning as an extension of the artist’s studios, Lippincott, Inc. was also a new kind of all-in-one sculpture production center that put the tools of industrial fabrication in the hands of artists, allowing them to produce at a scale they had previously only dreamt of on paper.

Lecture | Photographer Martine Fougeron discusses her work

Fougeron began her Tête-à-Tête project in 2005 as a student at the International Center of Photography. In this series of intimate portraits of her two adolescent sons and their friends in New York and in France, she reveals the face-to-face engagement of the mother-photographer with the private world of two brothers and their teen tribe. Curator and critic Charlotte Cotton has called the project “one of the best biographical stories that photography has crafted in the 2000s.” A Q&A session will follow the lecture.
