Author Reading | Jacques Lezra discusses his book Wild Materialism: The Ethic of Terror and the Modern Republic

Wild Materialism speaks to three related questions in contemporary political philosophy. How, if different social interests and demands are so constitutively antagonistic, can social unity emerge out of heterogeneity? Does such unity require corresponding universals, and, if so, what are they, where are they found, or how are they built? Finally, how must the concept of democracy be revised in response to economic globalization, state and nonstate terrorism, and religious, ethnic, or national fundamentalism?

Opening Reception | Maryanne Amacher: City-Links, An Exhibition on the Sound Artist

Between 1967 and 1981, the pioneering sound artist produced 22 City-Links projects in total, connecting distant microphones to installations and performances using dedicated FM-quality analog phone lines. Areas of downtown Buffalo, MIT, Boston Harbor, the Mississippi River, the New York Harbor, studios in various locations, and other sites in the USA and abroad were transported, sometimes integrating performers near the microphones (such as John Cage and George Lewis for City-Links #18, performed at The Kitchen in 1979). This exhibition brings together a number of documents, images and sound samples selected and reproduced from the nascent Amacher Archive as a first look at this important series of early telematic art works about which little has been published.

Workshop | What Dickens Drank

What did a cocktail taste like in 1842? Join them as they bring to life the drinks from the pages of Dickens' books and from the archives of historic gastronomy. Like any good tourist, when Charles Dickens visited America in 1842, he sampled the local food and drink. Of American bars, he said: "...The stranger is initiated into the mysteries of Gin-sling, Cocktail, Sangaree, Mint Julep, Sherry-cobbler, Timber Doodle and other rare drinks." For one evening, be tourists in time and mix up these antique potations. During this history lesson in flavor, guests will not only sip early American cocktails, but also learn how to make them. Recreate Dickens' experiences abroad by reproducing the spirits of his journey. Hosted by Sarah Lohman, an artist, writer, and "historic gastronomist" currently living and working in New York. Her projects can be seen on her blog, Four Pounds Flour.
