Concert | Marc Antoine, Classical Guitarist

Long before Antoine became one of contemporary jazz's most popular and inventive artists and performers, he was a Parisian teenager fully immersed in his studies, training at the International School of Classical Guitar. On his new recording My Classical Way, he pays homage to the great classical composers whose rich melodies inspired his own creative growth, putting colorful twists on ten beautifully familiar pieces with his trademark soulful grooves and wanderlust filled exotica. This is not the first time Antoine has used the term 'classical' in an album title--the title of his 1994 debut perfectly captured his trademark Classical Soul style that he has continued to develop over the past 15 years on hit-filled albums like Urban Gypsy, Madrid, Universal Language, Cruisin', Mediterraneo, Modern Times, and Hi-Lo Split.

Discussion | Immigrant Electoral Power: The Changing Face of Leadership in NYC

New York City today has four Asian-American elected officials, a far cry from only a decade ago. Although we have numerous Latino legislators, we have yet to elect a Latino citywide or statewide official, unlike other cities and states. As new generations of immigrants emerge and their children grow up, is New York's political character changing? Can new communities gain influence in government and society, and help reshape our political leadership? With: Sayu Bhojwani, Founding Director, The New American Leaders Project; Margaret Chin, New York City Council Member, District 1; Julissa Ferreras, New York City Council Member, District 21; Jonathan Hicks, Senior Fellow, The DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medger Evers; and John Mollenkopf, Director, Center for Urban Research, City University of New York. Moderated by: John Rudolph, Executive Producer, Feet in Two Worlds.

Discussion | The Art of Distraction: Using Red Herrings in Mysteries

With moderator, Jane K. Cleland and panelists, Annamaria Alfieri, Peggy Ehrhart, Heywood Gould, Roberta Isleib, Robert Quackenbush and Charles Salzberg of Mystery Writers of America - New York. A red herring is a “false clue,” used by writers the way magicians use sleight of hand—the goal is to distract readers from what’s really going on. When done well, red herrings add complexity to plots and intrigue to stories. In this lively panel, you’ll hear how authors who write in various mystery genres, from hard boiled and noir, to traditional and children's, use red herrings into their plots. These distinguished writers will discuss which red herrings they use and how they weave them into their narratives to create engaging and ingenious puzzles.

Poetry Reading | Harry Mathews reads from his book The New Tourism

Mathews' first full-length poetry collection in nearly 20 years. The American avant-garde legend here presents such compelling anomalies as the prose sestina, didactic gastronomy, and a haiku sequence—a diary of discrete (if not so discrete) late-night improvisations on the familiar Japanese three-line form. The central section brings together tersely lyrical poems devoted to the unpredictable deviations of intention and desire—the landscape of the new tourism.
