Author Reading | Andrew Scott Dolkart discusses his book Biography of a Tenement House in New York City: An Architectural History of 97 Orchard Street

The James Marston Fitch Associate Professor of Historic Preservation at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) and Director of the school's Historic Preservation Program recounts the life of a building at 97 Orchard Street, a typical tenement house in New York City that later became the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in 1988. He follows the building from the 1860s to 1935 when it was no longer residential, by tracing its architecture and the lives of immigrant families who resided there. He presents its design and construction with photos and blueprints, and considers the impact of tenement laws and reforms and changing living conditions.

Gallery Talk | Artist Babak Radboy talks about his work

Radboy lives in New York City where he works as the creative director of Bidoun magazine and as a freelance art director. Meanwhile he tends to a large and eccentric archive of books and magazines, which are essential to his practice as an artist. Currently his work is focused on a myopic inventory of the signs of the 20th century as they appear in print. Initially gathered as material for collage, his collection and his output has shifted in an effort to consider images, books, and printed ephemera without regard to their rhetorical, representational, or textual content. He aims to use source documents as a raw material in a manner more associated with sculpture and painting.

Lecture | The Feeling of Kinship: Queer Liberalism and the Racialization of Intimacy

A lecture by David L. Eng, University of Pennsylvania. This talk is drawn from Eng's recent book The Feeling of Kinship. In that project, Eng investigates the emergence of "queer liberalism," the empowerment of certain gays and lesbians in the United States economically through an increasingly visible and mass-mediated queer consumer lifestyle, and politically through the legal protection of rights to privacy and intimacy. Eng argues that in our "colorblind" age the emergence of queer liberalism is a particular incarnation of liberal freedom and progress, one constituted by both the racialization of intimacy and the forgetting of race. Through a startling reading of Lawrence v. Texas, the landmark legal decision overturning Texas's antisodomy statute, Eng reveals how the ghosts of miscegenation haunt both Lawrence and the advent of queer liberalism.
