Symposium | The Meaning of Averroes and Maimonides for Our Times

Muslim philosopher Averroes and Jewish philosopher Maimonides worked together in the 12th century to advance the writings of Aristotle, serving as an example of scholarly cooperation during the Crusades. The symposium will ask if the lives of Averroes and Maimonides and their 12th century Islamic Spain could serve as a source of inspiration today to the countries bordering the Mediterranean at a time of marked division,” said Mustapha Tlili, Founder and Director of the Center for Dialogues. The event will offer historical reflections and policy assessments by scholars and high government officials on the past, present, and future of the Mediterranean people. It will also include a screening of the documentary Averroes and Maimonides in Their Time and Ours and remarks by the film’s director, Jacob Bender. Other speakers include: John Brademas, President Emeritus of New York University; Jacques Lezra, Professor of Comparative Literature and Spanish and Portuguese at NYU; Ambassador Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalgham, Permanent Representative of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya to the United Nations; Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal and High Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for the Alliance of Civilizations; Jean-Christophe Menet, Advisor for the Union for the Mediterranean, Office of the President of the French Republic; and Jerónimo Páez-López , Former Director, El Legado Andalusí Foundation, Spain. Opening Reception | Exhibition: Gabriele d'Annunzio: Living Life as a Work of Art

The great Italian poet was a central figure in the Italian public and political life of the early 20th century. His controversial relationship with Fascism is still at the center of many debates. Between 1921 and 1938, the year of his death, d'Annunzio lived in and developed the "Vittoriale degli italiani", a hillside estate in the town of Gardone Riviera overlooking the Garda lake in Lombardy, Italy. At great expense, d'Annunzio furnished the estate as only a man of his intellectual stardom and audacity would dare, while the Fascist government picked up the bill. This exhibition is a collection of objects and artworks from the Vittoriale.

Jazz | Swing in Germany before and after 1945

Swing-Heinis, or Swing Kids: They called themselves Frank, Billy, Bobby, Teddy or Lord. Their hair was long and gelled. And they greeted one another with “swing high,” instead of with “Heil Hitler.” Swing stood (and stands) for an impetuous love of life and catchy rhythms- neither of which fit in well with world domination and marching music. For this reason, Swing was for the Nazis “degenerate” and “undesirable.” But in the 1930s and 1940s thousands of young people of all backgrounds were moved by this music. Many of the songs that came about in Germany during those years still remain standards today. The group is led by lawyer and pianist Dieter Feddersen. He is joined by Gebhard Ohnesorge on clarinet and baritone saxophone, Sabine Fischman on vocals, Sophia Reuter on viola, Horst Würzebesser on contrabass, and Torsten Adrian on percussion.

Talk | Artist David Reinfurt talks about his work

Reinfurt is an independent graphic designer, writer and editor. In 2000, he formed O-R-G inc., a graphic design practice composed of a constantly shifting network of collaborators. Alongside graphic designer Stuart Bailey, he established Dexter Sinister, a workshop in a basement on the Lower East Side, in 2006. The workshop is intended to model a Just-In-Time economy of print production, avoiding waste by working on-demand, utilizing local cheap machinery, considering alternate distribution strategies, and collapsing distinctions of editing, design, production, and distribution. Dexter Sinister publishes the semi-annual arts magazine Dot Dot Dot.

Panelists: Dennis Derryck, Ian Marvy, Annie Novak, David Vigil, and Karen Washington. Moderated by Jerome Chou. Design thinking—the analytical and prototyping methods employed by designers and planners—has been used in urban agriculture to address critical social problems, from improving access to nutritious food to developing social networks in low-income communities. In this event, panelists discuss their radically innovative projects: a farm share business that enables Hunts Point residents to own land supplying them with fresh produce, neighborhood farms set up on asphalt playgrounds and rooftops, and a connected community gardening and greenmarket venture in East New York.

Slide Lecture | The Financial District's Lost Neighborhood: 1900-1970

The Lower West Side from the World Trade Center site down and around the Battery was a thriving immigrant neighborhood for well over 100 years. At times it was referred to as Bowling Green Village or by its more definitive name "Little Syria" because of its large Arabic population. Downtown was home to a unique, diverse, integrated immigrant population. Irish, Syrians, Lebanese, Greeks, Turks, Slovaks, Poles, Ruthenians, Moravians, Ukrainians and others lived side by side in the narrow streets hugging the busy waterfront of Lower Manhattan. In this illustrated lecture you will learn about the immigrant life on the Lower West Side and the struggle to preserve the memory of this once great but mostly forgotten Downtown neighborhood.

Discussion | The Oil Spill

A man-made catastrophe of rare magnitude has changed the Gulf of Mexico. In the largest marine oil spill in history, the Deepwater Horizon disaster, oil spewed into the sea for close to three months, from April 20 to July 15, 2010, at the rate of 60,000 barrels per day. Join faculty members as they analyze aspects of the oil spill. Each panelist will speak for five minutes and address the crisis from their particular professional domain, including political science, economics, environmentalism, media, ethics, fashion, and art. Questions participants consider may include: What is the nature of our dependency on technology? What issues of design are implicated in the inability to cap the well? How have images of the plume served as a metaphor of the failures of both corporate responsibility and government regulation? What are the long-term social, political, and environmental consequences of this disaster?

Two years ago, readers eagerly devoured The Living Dead. Publishers Weekly named it one of the Best Books of the Year, and Barnes & Noble called it "The best zombie fiction collection ever." Now acclaimed editor John Joseph Adams is back for another bite at the apple -- the Adam's apple, that is -- with 44 more of the best zombie stories anywhere. A panel of zombie experts--Adams, along with contributors David Wellington, Bob Fingerman, David Barr Kirtley and Matt London--convene to dig to the bottom of such meaty issues as: Why are zombies so popular? Do we prefer fast zombies or slow zombies? And of course, most importantly of all, what will be your survival strategy on the inevitable day when the dead rise to consume the flesh of the living?

Talk | Prospects for War and Peace in the Middle East

For the Palestinians who live in the narrow coastal strip of Gaza, the December 2008 Israeli invasion was a nightmare of unimaginable proportions: in the 22-day-long action 1,400 Gazans were killed, several hundred on the first day alone. More than 6,000 homes were destroyed or badly damaged. The cost of the destruction and disruption of economic life, in one of the world’s poorest areas, is estimated at more than $3 billion. And yet, it is possible something redemptive will emerge from the tragedy of Gaza. For, as Norman Finkelstein details in a concise talk that melds cold anger with cool analysis, the profound injustice of the Israeli assault has been widely recognized by organizations impossible to brand as partial or extremist. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the UN investigation headed by Richard Goldstone, in documenting Israel's use of indiscriminate and intentional force against the civilian population during the invasion (100 Palestinians died for every one Israeli), have had an impact on traditional support for Israel.

Davis confirms her spot as one of the leading cartoonists and humorists of her generation. No story is too painful to tell - like how much she enjoyed fat camp - nor too personal - like her stories of growing up Jewish in Florida. Using her sweet but biting wit, Davis effortlessly carves out a wholly original and refreshing niche in two well-worn territories: autobio comics and the Jewish identity. Using beautiful watercolors, refreshing honesty and humor, her comics are sure to make an immediate impression.
