Screening | Scenes through the Cinema Lens: The Craft of the Choreographer

As the Hollywood cinema came of age in the 1930s, choreographers became increasingly essential when the screen was filled with dancers. Most of the great choreographers worked behind the scenes and were seldom recognized. This will celebrate Busby Berkeley, Gene Kelly, Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, and Agnes de Mille, all of whom deserve their celebrity. But it will also take a look at great dances staged by artists who are not as well known, including Hermes Pan, Michael Kidd, and Katherine Dunham. Featured films include Silk Stockings, Stormy Weather, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, All That Jazz, West Side Story, and Oklahoma.
