Park Walk | A Tour of Carol Bove's Sculptural Installation Caterpillar

Working mainly in the field of sculpture, Bove has been making sculptural installations that range from small-scale, intimate arrangements of objects to monumental outdoors artworks. In the early 2000s, Bove made a series of wall-mounted shelves, which contained disparate elements, such as used books, vintage magazines, vernacular sculptures, and found objects. Alongside these intimate installations, Bove has recently been working on larger compositions which often take over the entire exhibition space, turning the gallery into a landscape or a vitrine. For the project, Bove continues her research on the role and function of art in the public space, by creating seven new sculptures which are installed within the self-seeded landscape. Bove’s site-specific installation highlights the uniqueness of its location and opens a magical environment for viewers. Installed along a 300-yard stretch of the untouched terrain, Bove’s sculptures reveal themselves among the unruly vegetation, like mysteriously pristine ruins of a lost civilization or a contemporary version of a Zen garden. Tour times: 10 AM, 11 AM, 12PM, 2PM, 3PM.

Performance | Performance Art: Benjamin Patterson's A Penny for Your Thoughts

A key figure in the international Fluxus movement, Benjamin Patterson combines music, visual arts, and performance in his experimental projects that challenge traditional modes of art making. Patterson’s conceptual project A Penny for Your Thoughts promotes an exchange between artist and audience in which the artist offers participants hats constructed from newspapers in exchange for an idea, infusing the performance with a form of humor common to many Fluxus projects. Patterson directs viewers to “try on” the ideas of others, encouraging a reevaluation of individual perception and creating a commentary on the commodification and transfer of ideas.

Master Class | Master Class: Kenneth Gordon, violin

Kenneth Gordon has had an extraordinary career as a violinist that was destined the moment his grandfather gave him his first violin at age six. The violin was his first love; he enjoyed the challenge of coaxing its sonorous voice from the varnished wood. His second love was baseball, but it was not long after he fell and broke his wrist during a game, and could not perform a solo recital at Brooklyn Academy of Music, that baseball soon took a backseat to Kenneth’s burgeoning success in the violin.

Performance | Performance Art: Einat Amir's Our Best Intentions

Our Best Intentions invites audience members to take part in an intimate participatory performance combining elements from psychotherapy, theater and art. As individuals walk into a space divided into four domestic areas — a family lounge, a bedroom, a study, and a dining room – each participant selects a vest featuring an array of labels, such as "mother," "doubt," "addiction," "lover," and so forth. Under the direction of four moderators, the performance becomes a collaborative session wherein participants are encouraged to use personal stories and memories to confront unresolved issues, form momentary and intimate connections with strangers, and reveal themselves in unexpected ways. Our Best Intentions is an unpredictable series of interactions between moderators and audience members that seeks to contrast the individual/internal experience of therapy with the more dramatic devices of performance. As the action moves through the demarcated space, the audience is both active and passive, taking turns to watch other groups and participate within their own area, adding to the climatic, often emotional rollercoaster ride of different scenes that unfold in the space. Each interactive, closed session performance is 1 hour.
