Film | East of Eden (1955): Classic Epic Period Drama Starring James Dean

Set in 1917 California, a wild and unloved young man from a strife-torn family is at odds with his quiet, studious brother and puritanical father. Director: Elia Kazan Cast: Julie Harris, James Dean, Raymond Massey James Dean was an actor who became one of the most influential figures in Hollywood in the 1950s, and his impact on cinema and popular culture was profound, although his career lasted only five years. He appeared in just three major films: Rebel Without a Cause (1955), East of Eden (1955), and Giant (1956). These have been preserved in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for their "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance". He was killed in a car accident at the age of 24 in 1955, leaving him a lasting symbol of rebellion, youthful defiance, and the restless spirit.

Workshop | Artists & Educators Explore Decolonizing Abstract Artwork

Artist and educators Ad Minoliti and Catalina Schliebener present a class and workshop that repositions artistic abstraction out of its history as a tool of white essentialism and colonialism that has been perpetuated by art education. Rather, Minoliti, who will be present virtually, and Schliebener, who will lead the workshop, will guide participants through a decolonial teaching of the origins of abstraction, focusing on artists from the global south who work in queer or feminist abstraction. Participants will be given the framework to learn and engage with modern abstraction outside of its common depiction as the origins of the euro-vanguards. After a short lecture, participants will collage caricatures out of abstract artwork from art history into characters in a zine, adding comic-style speech balloons to create dialogue between the pieces. The invitation is to take a queer, whimsical, and collaborative approach with all pages being combined into one collaborative zine at the end of the workshop. Collage materials will be provided, but outside materials are welcome.

Reading | Academy of American Poets Fellow Shares Her New Hybrid, Performative Essay

Poet aracelis girmay hosts an evening of original writing, close readings, and sound to meditate on Black maternity and intergenerational imagination.  Beginning with the life of her great-grandmother, who was born to Black farm laborers in Georgia around 1909 and later migrated to Chicago, girmay has created a hybrid, performative essay focused on the histories and sensibilities of her foremothers while also contending with familial legacies of loss and displacement. This piece emerges from an extended study of works by caretakers, cultural workers, artists, and scholars that are, in girmay’s words, “attending to the imagination—and to lifemaking—in catastrophe.” girmay is the author of four full-length poetry collections, including the recently published GREEN OF ALL HEADS. Her writing has appeared in e-flux, Granta, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Paris Review, The Yale Review, and elsewhere. She has received numerous honors, among them a Whiting Award (2015) and an Academy of American Poets Fellowship (2025), and was a finalist for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature (2018).

Lecture | Award-Winning Artist Shares the History of Tompkins Square

Native New Yorker Eric Drooker (award-winning graphic novelist, painter, and frequent cover artist for The New Yorker) will project hundreds of slides as he recounts his childhood in Tompkins Square and traces the park's history back to the 19th century. After a financial crisis that affected New York City in the 70s and 80s, Lower East Side residents took back their neighborhood, fixed up buildings, and reclaimed the gardens, creating a sustainable, community way of life. Tompkins Square Park became an amazing example of the community's vibrance, cultivating music, art, and theater. However, once the city returned to a stronger financial position, authorities sought to take back community housing, gardens, and this new sustainable way of life and undermine these community-based projects. The neighborhood residents put up a fight to stop the gentrification, and Tompkins Square Park became a battleground. A protest encampment was established in the park, and what is known as the Tompkins Square Park Riots went on for several years. Eventually, after using a lot of violence, the city closed the park in 1991 and destroyed the bandshell. When they reopened the park, it was re-designed in a way that discouraged the free exchange of art, music, and public assembly. It has been that way ever since--fences everywhere you look.

Discussion | The Midwife of Secular Music — Panel on Gospel Quartet Traditions

Curated by vocalist Joy Brown, this panel discussion examines the lasting influence of gospel quartet music on American musical traditions, including rhythm & blues, soul, doo-wop, and early rock and roll. Rooted in Black church communities across the American South, the quartet tradition shaped generations of vocal performance through harmony, improvisation, and spiritual expression. Featuring guitarist Rodney Jones, bassist Endea Owens, and saxophonist Jason Marshall, the conversation offers insight into the cultural impact and enduring legacy of this foundational yet often underrecognized musical tradition.
