Concert | 2 sopranos perform François Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres

François Couperin was born in 1668 in Paris, where he lived and worked for most of his life, and where he became one of the central musical personalities both within the court of Louis XIV and beyond. He was the most talented of an illustrious French musical dynasty whose sphere of activity embraced above all the church. Amongst Couperin’s most beautiful sacred compositions are his three Leçons de Ténèbres composed around 1713-15. Setting the first two lessons as solos allowed Couperin to give each soprano a dazzling display of virtuosity, while the duet setting of the third and final section reaches a higher level of dramatic intensity, brimming with dissonant suspensions and expressive fervor. Performers: Jolle Greenleaf and Molly Quinn, sopranos; Emily Walhout, gamba; Hank Heijink, theorbo; John Scott, continuo.
