Talk | Artists Lin & Lam talk about their work

Inspired by a particular site, historical incident, or political issue, Lin & Lam’s work emerges from the interrelation between current events and residues of the past. Recent project have addressed the construction of national identities through propaganda and democratization, and the haunting of daily life by the specter of war, militarism, and socio-political inequities. Attentive to materiality, site, and the specificities of different medium, their collaboration integrates individual strengths and backgrounds. Trained in architecture, H. Lan Thao Lam uses photography, sculpture, and installation to address social memories of time and place. Lana Lin’s interests extend from a tradition of critical cinema, raising questions about the inadequacies of translation and the politics of producing strangers. Their work has been exhibited at international venues including the New Museum, the Kitchen, the Queens Museum, and the 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, China.

Lecture | Citizenship in India: Some Preliminary Results of a National Survey

Citizenship is a valued resource whose wide dispersal across the population enhances the resilience of a political system. While legal entitlement to citizenship under the laws of the land is a necessary condition, by itself, it does not suffice for the individual to feel the full power and potentials of citizenship. Subrata Mitra is Head of the Department of Political Science at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg, and served as director of the Institute (2002-04). He has held appointments at the Indian Council for Social Science Research (New Delhi), as well as at the Institut Français d'Opinion Public (Paris). Mitra was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (New Delhi) and President of the joint Research Committee on Political Sociology of the International Political Science Association and the International Sociological Association (2002-06).

Discussion | Shared Space: The Joseph M. Cohen Collection, an Art Book

Editor Ray Merritt and philanthropist Henry Buhl will join art collector Joseph M. Cohen to discuss the publication of Shared Space: The Joseph M. Cohen Collection, and his strategy of gathering one of the most varied and personal art collections in the world. The Cohen Family Collection is vast, but also very personal, often with a tale behind each work. Among the highlights of this collection are paintings by Tiepolo, Degas, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Balthus, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Joan Mitchell and David Hockney, and photographs by Atget, Dorothea Lange, Irving Penn, Avedon, Sugimoto and Chuck Close. Edited by Merritt, this massive celebration of the collection illustrates many of the works in situ, and, through informative and entertaining commentary, casts light on their diversity and significance.

Author Reading | Donna Goodman discusses her book A History of the Future

The political, social, and economic upheaval of the early twentieth century generated an extraordinary range of proposals for the future as successive generations grappled with issues of organizing vast urban systems and humanizing dense industrial environments. As conceptual design became the vehicle for exploring ideas and presenting new movements, a dialogue between technology and design began to emerge. A History of the Future explores the impact of modern technology on design and planning, beginning with Renaissance concepts that laid the foundations for modern visionary work and concluding with emerging projects in sustainable design. It also includes relevant projects in related fields, such as film, photography, and industrial design. Profusely illustrated, A History of the Future is a visual survey of the heroic, utopian, and occasionally misguided visions of the twentieth century.

Screening | Patricio Guzmán's Documentary Chile, Obstinate Memory (1997): The Pinochet Years

When the Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón initiated the groundbreaking persecution of General Augusto Pinochet, in 1998, commentators were quick to note the painful irony of the fact that Spain itself had yet to come to terms with its own dictator, Francisco Franco. In the past ten years, both Spain and Chile have made tremendous progress on this front. This film visits with Chileans who experienced the coup first-hand. 52 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. A post-screening discussion focuses on how both Spain and Chile have had to revise their history, distorted by decades of dictatorship, in search of the truth about the past.

Dance Performance | Presentation and Concert: Archivo Digital del Tango

The Archivo Digital de Tango is an initiative of TangoVia, a cultural organization based in Buenos Aires. Its goal is to digitize and preserve the patrimony of recorded tango and associated materials, which are scattered among dozens of collections throughout the world. The task is particularly urgent due to the old age of many collectors, the high value of the items in the international market, and the lack of a standard conservation procedure. The Archive preserves these old audio and video recordings and documents and makes them available to musicologists, students, journalists and the general public. Tango was recently included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This event will include presentations on TangoVia’s activities and on the ADT, as well as a performance by Pablo Aslan in a preview of his concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center on March 26.

Screening | Sam Bozzo's Documentary Blue Gold: World Water Wars (2008): The Battle for the Source of Life

With Malcolm MacDowell. While most Americans take access to clean water for granted, water security continues to be a major global issue. The rampant overdevelopment of agriculture, housing and industry increase the demands for fresh water well beyond the finite supply, resulting in the desertification of the earth. The film presents worldwide examples of people fighting for their basic right to water, from court cases to violent revolutions to U.N. conventions to revised constitutions to local protests at grade schools. 90 min. The film will be followed by a Q&A on access to clean water with Dr. Natasha Iskander, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Iskander is launching an initiative on water, climate change, and service delivery in cities around the world and has worked in non-profits in Egypt and the United States on issues of urban development, micro credit and community health planning. She has also worked as a community activist and migrant labor organizer.

Lecture | The Autism Matrix: The Social Origins of the Autism Epidemic

A lecture by Gil Eyal, Columbia University. Over the last 20 years, the number of autism diagnoses has risen exponentially, leading to talk about an unexplained "epidemic" of autism. In the talk, I will show that this rise was caused by a process of looping traceable to the formation, around autism, of a socially innovative network of expertise linking parents and therapists, as well as to the de-institutionalization of mental retardation. The point of this argument, however, will not be to debunk the claims of epidemic, but to develop a case for a public sociology of expertise, and to show how it may serve to encourage public discussion of the heretofore unrecognized ethical dimension of the rise in autism diagnoses. Reception to follow.
