Discussion | School Food Matters: Hunger, Obesity and Reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act

According to advocates, families of at least 1 in 5 New York City children still rely on soup kitchens and food pantries, despite free school breakfast and subsidized school lunches. President Obama pledged to end child hunger in the US by 2015, and the reauthorization of the federal Child Nutrition Act is expected by September. What would it take, in this time of recession, to ensure that more children receive free–and higher quality—school food? Why are about one-quarter of New York City elementary school students obese? Can hurdles be cleared for a better approach, or is the government already doing what it can? Keynote by Kevin Concannon, Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, US Department of Agriculture. Discussion with Eric Goldstein, CEO, SchoolFood, NYC Department of Education; Jan Poppendeick, author, Free for All: Fixing School Food in America; Jonathan Stein, General Counsel, Community Legal Services of Philadelphia; and Jim Weill, President, Food Research and Action Center. Moderator: Fred Mogul, Reporter, WNYC radio.

Opening Reception | Eye of the Mind: Contemporary Photography by Emerging and Established Artists

The aim of this exhibition is to ask the viewer to re-examine the creative process and mental illness. “Can and how does mental illness define the creative process? If we know beforehand that this is work by people with mental illness, does that change how we look at it? What happens if we mix in works by well-known photographers?” Six member-artists whose work is defined by the use of a camera will be paired with established artists including Weegee, Lee Friedlander, Morton Bartlett, Richard Shaver, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, and Hans Bellmer. This pairing reflects the curator’s wish to juxtapose similar visual images, so that the viewer sees what the artists saw as they focused their cameras. Reflection, urban grit, and solitude are all revealed.”

Screening | Richard Wolff's Documentary Capitalism Hits the Fan: Wage Stagnation and Debt

A look at the root causes of today's economic crisis and traces its source to the 1970s, when wages began to stagnate and American workers were forced into a spiral of borrowing and debt. By placing the crisis in this framework, the film argues that proposals for government "bailouts," offers of stimulus packages, and calls for increased market regulation will not address the real causes of the crisis. It suggests that far more fundamental change is necessary to avoid future catastrophes. A Q&A session with the director follows. Coffee, soda, and water will be served.

Author Reading | Jack F. Matlock, Jr discusses his book Superpower Illusions: How Myths and False Ideologies Led America Astray--And How to Return to Reality

Matlock, Jr. served in the American Foreign Service from 1956 to 1991, and was U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union from March 1987 to August 1991. He has held academic posts since 1991, and is currently adjunct professor of international relations at Columbia University. He refutes the enduring idea that the United States forced the collapse of the Soviet Union via military and economic pressure. He posits that the end of the Cold War diminished, rather than enhanced, American power; with the removal of the Soviet threat, allies were less willing to accept American protection and leadership that seemed increasingly to ignore their interests. In conversation with Foreign Affairs editor James F. Hoge, Jr.

Discussion | Reproductive Justice in Action

This panel will feature a group of reproductive justice activists and birth doulas who work across the spectrum of pregnancy, birth, and women's health, connecting the traditional reproductive rights movement with new social justice activism that considers the complete physical, political, and economic well-being of girls and women. Birth doulas, as trained sources of physical, emotional, and educational support, work to empower women and support their reproductive choices. How does childbirth fit into the discussion around reproductive rights, a discussion that is often based around access to abortion and contraception? How can the reproductive justice framework help us consider institutional barriers, such as racism and poverty, that have limited women's empowerment and decision-making when it comes to their reproductive health? Panelists include Aisha Domingue, doula coordinator at the Brooklyn Young Mothers Collective; Mary Mahoney, assistant director of the Pro-Choice Public Education Project and co-founder and co-coordinator of the Doula Project; Lauren Mitchell, health educator and co-founder and co-coordinator of the Doula Project; and Miriam Pérez, founder and sole blogger at RadicalDoula.com and editor at Feministing.com.
