Lecture | Abstractionist Aesthetics and Social Critique in African American Culture

Phillip Brian Harper, Professor of English and Social Cultural Analysis, speaks. It is widely assumed that a primary function of African-American expressive culture is to comment critically on prevailing racial-political arrangements, and that the best way of doing this is to depict African-Americans' collective experiences in as realistic a manner as possible. This lecture, which capsulizes the argument of a just-completed book project, by contrast proposes that modes of aesthetic abstractionism - as distinct from realism - can actually be very effective in registering racial-political critique; and it further posits that literature - as distinct from either music or the visual arts - comprises the art form in which abstractionism can have the strongest critical impact in the current historical moment.

Opening Reception | 12th Annual International Krappy Kamera Competition

This unique and eagerly awaited exhibition, which the gallery has fondly termed the Krappy Kamera Show, will feature images that have been produced using equipment from the low end of the technological scale. The concept underlying this show is that in the hands of an artist, any piece of equipment can be used to create engaging photographs. The Krappy camera category, which has included well-known names such as Diana, Holga and Lubitel as well as obscure junk-store finds and homemade pinhole jobs now adds cellphones and the like to the list.

Opening Reception | Into the Unknown: Group Show Using Materials from the Past

Into the Unknown brings together works by artists and filmmakers who reflect upon and make productive use of archival film footage and other material from the past. The works focus on how such stored images are received and interpreted today, not just on the circumstances in which they were once produced. In their hands the archive becomes a journey into unknown territories, but at the same time it is always reconfigured according to today's interests and perspectives. Paradoxically, the constructed past that these artists excavate from the archive radiates a presence rivaling that of the present moment. Artists: Deimantas Narkevičius, Sarah Pierce, Mariana Silva and Dmitry Gutov, João Dias, and António Cunha Telles.

Author Reading | Leonard Levitt reads from his book NYPD Confidential: Power and Corruption in the Country's Greatest Police Force

For years, the police commissioner and the mayor of New York City have duked it out for publicity, credit, and power. Some have translated their stardom into success after leaving office, while others have been hung out to dry. In the battle for control of the country’s most powerful police force, these high-status government officials have often chosen political expediency over public honesty. The result is a legacy of systemic corruption and cover-ups that is nothing less than shocking. Journalist Levitt has covered the NYPD for New York Newsday, and the New York Post among other papers. His columns have made him persona non grata in police headquarters. In his book he reveals everything he’s discovered throughout his decades-long career. With amazing details of backroom deals and larger-than-life powerbrokers, he lays bare the backstabbing, power grabs, and chaotic internal investigations that have run the NYPD’s reputation into the ground in the past—and the forces conspiring to do so once again.

Author Reading | Claire Harman reads from her book Jane's Fame: How Jane Austen Conquered the World

Mention Jane Austen and you’ll likely incite a slew of fervent opinions from anyone within earshot. Regarded as a brilliant social satirist by scholars, Austen also enjoys the sort of popular affection usually reserved for girl-next-door movie stars, leading to the paradox of an academically revered author who has served as the inspiration for modern blockbusters. Almost two hundred years after her death, Austen remains a hot topic, and the current flare in the cultural zeitgeist echoes the continuous revival of her works, from the time of original publication through the twentieth century. Harman gives us the complete biography—of both the author and her lasting cultural influence—making this essential reading for anyone interested in Austen’s life, works, and remarkably potent fame.
