Discussion | The Third Plenum: What Is Xi Jinping’s Plan for China? (online)

Xi Jinping will preside over the Third Plenum of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party on July 15-18. This meeting will focus on ideas to “further comprehensively deepen reform” and “advance Chinese-style modernization” amid growing concerns about Beijing’s ability to steward the country’s economic, geopolitical, and social development. Several days later the Party will issue an authoritative “decision” that should guide policymaking for years to come. This is a rapid-reaction webinar hosted by the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis (CCA) that will analyze the context, contents, and consequences of this momentous policy document. CCA Fellow Neil Thomas will lead a discussion with CCA experts Bert Hofman, Lizzi C. Lee, and Guoguang Wu. Attendees will be invited to submit questions during the event. Attendees may also be interested in CCA’s flagship Decoding Chinese Politics product, which helps decode Beijing’s “black box” through interactive visualizations and explainer essays that map formal institutions, informal networks, key decision-makers, and major policy trends.

Book Club | North Woods by Daniel Mason

North Woods is a 2023 novel by American novelist Daniel Mason. The novel, Mason's sixth, is a work of historical fiction that tells the story of a single house in New England over the course of several centuries. When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refuse to give up their secrets. A lovelorn painter, a sinister con man, a stalking panther, a lusty beetle: As the inhabitants confront the wonder and mystery around them, they begin to realize that the dark, raucous, beautiful past is very much alive.

Opening Reception | Masahiko Minami: The Logic of Memory

Minami works with charcoal and graphite to create minimalist landscapes in dramatic contrast. As finely textured lines creep into bright channels of white space, gradients bloom from their dark edges. These landscapes flicker and blur, unfolding through the logic of memory—cascades of associations between light and shadow, the natural realm and human emotion. Rooted in our shared humanity, Minami’s landscapes embrace this ephemerality as evidence of life’s vibrance, possibility, and innate capacity for hope. Like fleeting moments in a collective memory, his works offer a quiet refuge from the realities of daily life. In a world brimming with conflict, Minami hopes to “light a small lamp in the hearts” of viewers.

Book Discussion | The Last Sane Woman: Led On by Letters

Hannah Regel's beguiling debut novel about friendship and failure.  Nicola Long is a few years out of a fine arts degree, listless and unenthusiastically employed in London. She begins to spend her hours at a small underfunded archive dedicated to women’s art. There she discovers one side of a correspondence beginning in 1976 and spanning a dozen years, written from one woman – a ceramics graduate, uncannily like Nicola – to a friend living a contrasting and conventionally moored life. As Nicola reads on, an acute sense of affinity turns into obsession. She abandons one job after another to make time for the archive. The litany of coincidences in the letters becomes uncanny, and Nicola’s feeling of ownership begets a growing dread: should she be afraid of where these letters are leading?

Stern Senior Fellow of Jewish Civilization, and Jonathan Silver for a special event. They will explore how Dr. Wisse first became interested in the artistic legacy of the Hebrew Bible; some of the artists and works of art he will examine in his course; why Scripture was such a potent source of inspiration for the most creative minds of Western civilization; and how studying great art can help shed light on the meaning of the Bible's text as seen through both a Jewish and a Christian lens.

Concert | Delicate DIY Folk Band

Shallow Alcove's delicate, DIY folk music take on the lullaby of bedroom pop is a thoughtful exploration of early nostalgia for yesterday's loves and heartbreaks. What started as friends writing songs in the bedrooms and basements of upstate New York has traveled to the urban hustle of New York City and Philadelphia, but the band’s roots remain the same: storytelling with the people they love. Founded and fronted by lead singer Grace Krichbaum and lead guitarist Dan Harris, Shallow Alcove has since expanded to include members Peter Groppe (guitar), Jack Harrington (bass, keyboard), and Noah Dadaris (percussion). They combine stacked vocal harmonies, catchy riffs, and diary-like lyricism to share a disarmingly honest, refreshingly tender soundtrack to the ephemerality of young adulthood. These are dynamic and sweetly melodic narratives that anyone can relate to, mapping the intricacies of changing relationships, the turning of the seasons, bad haircuts, and the ache of growing up.

Performance | Fabric Softener: Performance Art Inspired by Toni Morrison

Asia Stewart's Fabric Softener is a theatrical response to Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, offering an imagined ritual with the power to revive young Black women and insist on their survival. Stewart draws on three characters from the many who populate Morrison's 1977 novel: Pilate, her daughter Reba, and granddaughter Hagar. In the original text, Hagar dies of a broken heart after deeming herself unworthy of love, beauty, and acceptance. In her performance, punctuated by musical outbursts of spirituals and passages from the novel, Stewart presents three new characters who are not recreations of these women but are instead archetypes: The Laundress, The Celebrant, and The Witness. The performance begins as The Celebrant and The Witness prepare The Laundress for an intervention: a baptism, a becoming, and a funeral for what used to be and can no longer exist.
