Play | Illusions: An Exercise in Collective Storytelling

Ivan Viripaev’s play is an exercise in collective storytelling about people you’ve never met. Two men and two women untangle the lives of two couples they’ve never met based on the traces they’ve left behind: a pile of broken lamps, tattered chairs, and overturned refrigerators, all left to rot and rust on a sidewalk. Except…who left them? Who were these couples? What have they left behind? And who have they left it for? This is a directing thesis production by current student Andrew Freeburg.

At the 77th Golden Globe Awards, Knives Out received three nominations in the Musical or Comedy category while also receiving Best Original Screenplay nominations at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards and 92nd Academy Awards. It was selected by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2019. On his 85th birthday, crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead in his room. Just as authorities are about to dismiss the tragedy as suicide due to the lack of evidence to prove otherwise, detective Benoit Blanc arrives at the scene to conduct his own investigation. Soon, it is revealed that all of Thrombey's family have a reason to murder the family's patriarch. Dir: Rian Johnson With Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, and Christopher Plummer. 131 Min. Author Reading | The Story of an Irish American Family Across Generations

Through the lens of the Seven Deadly Sins/Lively Virtues, John Kearns’ Worlds examines four generations of the Logan family from Ireland in 1870 to New York City in 1998. In a series of episodes arranged by theme, Worlds portrays a family through poetic shards of narrative: Seamus Logan, a broken-hearted lover who flees his home in 1870. Reverend Sarsfield Logan, S.J., a Jesuit priest who teaches French at Xavier High School in Manhattan’s Chelsea section in 1910. Janey Logan (nee Dougherty), a sensitive introvert who falls in love with her engaged boss, James Logan, in the 1970s Philadelphia suburbs. And Paul Logan, a former South Bronx teacher and would-be poet/musician taking a wild late-night car trip from the World Trade Center to Times Square as the 1998 Good Friday Agreement is signed in Northern Ireland. Hosted by Kearns, this reading and book signing features actors Elisabeth Ness and Brendan Walsh performing excerpts from the novel and Mary Courtney performing songs mentioned in the novel.

Opening Reception | Jean-François Lauda: recent works

Jean-François Lauda’s marks are soothingly efficient, his color logic displayed between subdued pastels and rich earth tones. He scratches numerous compositional itches, leaving viewers to satiate over vast fields of minimalist-leaning abstraction. Pools of aura are decorated with spurts of energized brushwork and carefully executed geometries. Importantly though, the artist doesn’t enact any preconceived formulas, but follows the paths that emerge from spontaneous mark-making. These works accumulate gestures, leavened by way of Lauda’s intuitive command of shape and color. Small watercolors are conceived as intimate windows into his larger nonrepresentational paintings, paring them down into formally masterful capsules.

Opera | Dark Tale Inspired By a True Story

Follow one woman’s dangerous attempt to escape her life as a member of the FLDS Church (Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints), a sect that split from mainstream Mormonism in the early 20th Century largely because of the LDS Church’s renunciation of polygamy. The male founders of the Mormon faith (Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, chief among them) loom large in American history, but this new show puts the women front and center. The narrative draws inspiration from the flurry of media attention surrounding the two most infamous raids on FLDS compounds (the 1953 raid at Short Creek, AZ and the 2008 raid at the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado, TX) as well as the stories of the over 80 wives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. Set against a red-earthed landscape filled with revelations, dark prophets and white temples stretching towards heaven, chart one woman’s quest for self-discovery in a world where personal identity is forbidden. Directed by Laine Rettmer. Conducted by Geoff McDonald. Cast: Betsy Podsiallo, Sofia Durante, Melissa Hartman, Ziwan Nie, Marcella Astore, Meredith Gray, Emily Summers, Gabriella Aguilar, Joohyun Kim, India Rowland, Sunwei Li, Isabel Silva, Luna Park, Carolyn Boulay, Christopher Lau.
