Slide Lecture | Tragedies and Triumphs: Riots, Radical Women, and the “Radium Girls”

An illustrated lecture by Professor Christina Stern. The Triangle Factory fire. Women labor activists. Emma Goldman. The kosher beef riots. Margaret Sanger. The “Radium Girls.” Explore pivotal moments in the history of working and working-class women in New York City and the broader metropolitan area. As New York industrialized in the late 1800s to early 1900s, large numbers of women – young, old, native-born, newly arrived immigrants – entered the burgeoning workforce. They worked as factory workers, as “shop girls,” as teachers, and as businesswomen. Like their male counterparts, they faced many tough challenges. Their dramatic – and sometimes surprising - stories remain a vital part of the city’s dynamic history.

Opening Reception | Jo Ellen Van Ouwerkerk’s “Curious Sanctuary”

A brilliant painter who seemingly channels the late 19th century, Van Ouwerkerk’s women are intriguing and complicated. Her characters show their personal state of being and engage in ritualistic scenes carried out in special places. They push the acceptable boundaries of a time long ago - or perhaps even today - and tempt us to become voyeurs. This body of work is a view into these women’s private day-to-day existence. “My paintings are not intended to be fantasies; everything is actually as you see it.”

Dance Performance | Shim Sham Featuring Roxane “Butterfly” and the Theo Hill Trio

Based in New York and Barcelona, French-born tap dancer Roxane “Butterfly” was given her name by the late legendary be-bop hoofer Jimmy Slyde. Known for her Worldbeats projects that merge a range of musical influences including flamenco, Central African, Indian, classical, and experimental jazz with tap dance, Butterfly hosts this free open jam session in which some of the finest of New York City’s rhythm tap community come together to share and showcase their moves. Having started her 25 year career in France, Butterfly has shared the stage with generations of tap greats including Slyde, Gregory Hines, The Nicholas Brothers, Tamango, and Savion Glover. She is known for her collaborations with musicians working in a range of diverse musical forms. The evening also features the live music of the Theo Hill Trio and promises to make for a dynamic gathering of rhythmic exchange. The jam is open to tap dancers of all levels and concludes with the famous Shim Sham Shimmy, the hoofers’ international anthem. So come enjoy the show or bring your shoes and join the jam!

Concert | Eastern-Western Fusion: Dave Fiuczynski’s KiF

Perhaps best known as the guitarist of the madly exuberant jazz-funk-rock group Screaming Headless Torsos, Dave Fiuczynski was also the original guitarist of Meshell N’degeocello’s formidable band. These days, Dave and his double-necked guitar are looking eastward, partnering with five-stringed electric cellist Rufus Cappadocia and others for a hard-edged experiment in—to use Dave’s phrase—“eastern-exotica-western-exstatica.”
