Other | Solidarity and support for the persecuted Belarus artists and activists

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) and Amnesty International USA will be hosting a rally to show solidarity and support for the persecuted Belarus artists and activists, including Belarus Free Theater whose powerful production of BEING HAROLD PINTER was just staged to great acclaim at this year’s Under the Radar Festival. The hour-long peaceful demonstration will be held on the southwest corner of East 67th Street and Lexington Avenue, just down the street from the Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations, and will feature speeches and shows of support from protesters and the theatrical community, including Linda Emond, Stephen Spinella, Lynn Nottage, Gail Papp and Oskar Eustis. Protesters will wear gags to show the horror of persecution and the injustice of suppressed speech. After recently meeting with and gaining the support of Hillary Clinton, the group will deliver a petition from The Public Theater, Amnesty International USA and Belarus Free Theater to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the start of the rally that sheds light on the infringements to the Belarusian artists’ freedoms and rights following the disputed elections in Belarus on December 19th, 2010 and implores the United Nations to take action and investigate these injustices. Adapted and Directed by Uladzimir Shcherban, BEING HAROLD PINTER, by the Belarus Free Theater, played a sold out run at this year’s Under the Radar Festival and performed an encore benefit performance on Monday, January 17 to raise money for the persecuted theater company. The powerful play incorporates transcripts from Belarusian political prisoners with excerpts from Harold Pinter’s lifetime of writings. Creating visually striking images with simple means and underscoring the fierceness of Pinter’s words with the intense physicality of the actors, BEING HAROLD PINTER blurs the boundaries between art and reality, delivering a poignant contemporary commentary on violence, oppression, freedom and human dignity. BELARUS FREE THEATER (BFT) was founded in 2005 by Natalia Koliada along with her husband, Nikolai Khalezin, who is the company’s General Director and Producer. The company features Pavel Garadnitski, Irene Iarochevitch, Mikalai Khalezin, Yana Rusakevich, Aleh Sidorchyk, Dzianis Tarasenka, and Maryna Yurevich.

Lecture | The Future of Public Health: Innovation

How is it that with over $100 billion spent in the "war on cancer" over the past 30 years, research has yielded only modest advances? Why haven't scientists come up with an effective approach to the obesity epidemic and other persistent problems of our day? Is the lack of innovative thinking largely to blame? These kinds of questions have led respected epidemiologist, recognized expert in women’s health research, and dean of The University of Texas School of Public Health, Roberta B. Ness, MD, MPH, to study how innovative thinking is, or in many cases is not, being taught to students of health and the sciences. Be sure to join Dr. Ness for her Grand Rounds on the Future of Public Health lecture to learn more about creative thinking and how to teach students to be the much-needed innovators of tomorrow. A reception will follow the open question and answer period

Discussion | Without Conscience: Why Psychopaths Make Such Interesting Characters

The psychopath has long been a compelling interest for both readers and writers of mystery fiction. These miscreants are driven by forces darker than mere greed or passion in committing their heinous crimes. This panel will walk the corridors of the psychopath’s mind and analyze what draws us to them, and what horrifies us, at the same time. The award-winning panel will also discuss how the creation of fictional psychopaths influences the writer in both good and bad ways. The psychopath, perhaps the most essential bad person in mystery fiction, making this discussion relevant to the understand of the genre. With moderator Anthony Rainone and panelists Katia Lief, Alice Loweecey, Jonathan Maberry, Wendy Corsi Staub and Wallace Stroby of Mystery Writers of America - New York Chapter.

Discussion | Bob Dylan and the Band: An Evening of Dylan Poetry & Musings Featuring Rick Moody and David Lehman

The evening will feature an interactive discussion with novelist Rick Moody and poet David Lehman on the topic of Dylan and the Band and their response to a particular snapshot of the band performing with Cher. Here’s a little back-story to this event: William G. Scheele, who was the equipment/stage manager for The Band and Bob Dylan from 1969 to 1976 and a photographer whose work is currently on exhibit at the LABA Gallery, snapped a red-tinted picture of Dylan and The Band jamming with, of all people, Cher. It was an extremely arresting photograph – were they playing a wedding gig in Hell? – and so Ken Gordon, founder of the improvisational-writing website QuickMuse and editor of JBooks.com, the Online Jewish Book Community, thought it would make for a great session of improvisation. So he sent it to novelist Rick Moody and poet David Lehman, and asked them to improvise written responses. These two accomplished artists will appear onstage to discuss Dylan, their QuickMuse writings, and whatever else pops up in the course of the evening, live in front of the audience.
