Inspired by the richness of the natural world and the complexities of modern day life, the artists in Elemental Realms give the fullest possible expression to the human delight in exploring the universe and ourselves. Enigmatic Realms features works which deal with the poetry, passion and even occasional tragedy that come together to create the world in which we live. With inspirations that come from all around the world, as well as from within themselves, the artists of Symbols of Synergy present diverse subjects and motivations through the shared prism of their need to create. Self-reflection and a consideration of human nature plays a role in The Persistence of Form, as these artists seek the ineffable explanation of experience and understanding.

Author Reading | Eric Metaxas discusses his book Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy—A Righteous Gentile Versus the Third Reich

As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer—a pastor and author, known as much for such Christian spiritual classics as The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together as for his 1945 execution in a concentration camp for his part in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. In the first major biography of Bonhoeffer in forty years, the author covers both strands of Bonhoeffer’s life—the theologian and the spy—drawing them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Opening Reception | Group Show: NY/Prague 6

This exhibition presents a fresh look at the work of artists from both NYC and Prague. Six NYC artists were invited over the Summer to spend three weeks in residence at Chateau Trebesice in the Czech Republic to produce site-specific work in response to the history and architecture of the site. They created new works, affording us the opportunity to explore the process from conceptualization to realization with them. This residency/exhibition facilitates a dialogue between the NYC artists, the local community, and the contemporary art scene.

Concert | Silver Roots: Ancient Dances

Silver Roots—Maria Millar, violin, Shawn Wyckoff, flute and Michael Haas, cello—explore the intersection of classical music and the traditional music and dances of Europe in their compelling new program Ancient Dances. Drawing from classical and world music sources, improvisation and original material, the program is a journey of sonic discovery. The world premiere of a work by Norwegian composer Otto Martin Christensen highlights the evening. Also on the program: a piece juxtaposing works by English Renaissance and Baroque composers Locke alongside those of 20th-century masters Cowell, Harrison and Cage, and a compendium of up-tempo dance tunes from Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany and England. The musicians of Silver Roots, all graduates of Juilliard, were recently awarded a Chamber Music America Residency Grant. Since 2008, the trio has presented concerts, workshops, masterclasses and outreach programs across the country and in Canada. They have appeared at Lincoln Center as part of Meet the Artist series.
