Opening Reception | The Suckadelic Art Toy Universe: A Show of Toy Parodies

Intentionally confusing, misleading, disappointing and really funny, the limited edition parodies of action figures in this show reverberate with a vicious wit and are oddly eyeball-pleasing in the manner of all kinds of toothsome 20th/21st century collage and montage art. The toys and their packaging comment on pop culture commodification and the consumer habits of compulsively shopping "kidults."

Slide Lecture | “Manhattan is not only full of schist...”: The Uses of Stone in the City

An illustrated lecture with Sidney Horenstein, a geologist and Environmental Educator Emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History. Walk down any block in the city and you will sure to find a treasure trove of stones from many places in the world - whether they are paving blocks and curbstone or slabs of bluestone and granite on sidewalks, or the great variety of dimension stone that can be seen in the facades, lobbies and restrooms of buildings old and new. While the number of new buildings using natural materials has been increasing stones that have been laid down on sidewalks and streets are disappearing either by wholesale removal or covered over by asphalt. People are aware of marble, granite and sandstone because of its color, texture and intrinsic design though they are generally not aware of the hidden stories they tell embedded in the stone - ranging from their geologic history sometimes extending back billions of years to the drama of the people who quarried cut and carved the stone. While you can easily find stones in structures from diverse places in the world from Alaska to India, so will you also find local rocks - the schist of Manhattan to the bluestone of the Catskill Mountains. This illustrated lecture will select various examples of stone currently seen around the city that illustrate aspects of its geology and history of use.

Discussion | Rebels with a Cause: 2 Children of the 60s

Catherine Gildener, author of After the Falls, in conversation with singer/songwriter Carole Pope. Gildiner and Pope were teenagers in the 1960s when society wasn't quite ready for independently-minded young women with a cause. Gildiner decided to take a stand against the injustices of race. Pope decided that complacent pop music needed a dose of sexual freedom and expression. Independently, in ways both personal and on public stages, Gildiner and Pope influenced and continue to shape their times. A selection of wines from Canada will be served following the event courtesy of the Consulate General of Canada in New York.
