Lecture | From Slavery to Freedom: Liberating the Soviet Jewish Women from Gender Inequality

From the outset, the Bolsheviks strove to create an official atheistic communist culture and revolutionize the norms of behavior of Soviet citizens, regulating all aspects of everyday life. Guided by the ethos of the Party, Bolshevik culture was didactic, moralistic, and atheistic, as it tried to rid Soviet citizens of religiosity, and as it aimed at breaking down the old customs, beliefs, and manners that characterized pre-revolutionary life. Speaker Elissa Bemporad is the Jerry and William Ungar Associate Professor of East European Jewish History and the Holocaust at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center. She is the author of Becoming Soviet Jews: The Bolshevik Experiment in Minsk (Indiana University Press, 2013), winner of the National Jewish Book Award and of the Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History.

The show marks the first time that these works will be exhibited side-by-side (they were previously shown at Miami’s Center for Visual Communication during Art Basel and Max Protetch Gallery in New York), uniting a playful, deliberate and exposed, multivalent body of work.

Lecture | Cabinet Logics: An Intellectual History of Book Furniture

While the physical properties of our reading materials, and our material engagements with them, have evolved over the millennia – and particularly within the past decade – we still rely on physical supports, furnishings, to scaffold our interactions with them. Even “the cloud” that seems to float above us today relies on heavy architecture for its operation. In this talk, Shannon Mattern of The New School focuses on the furniture we design and build (or buy, or appropriate, or kludge together) to make, store, support, organize, and preserve our bibliographic objects. These structures scaffold our media technologies, inform the way human bodies relate to those media, and embody certain assumptions about what and how we know things through these objects.

Lecture | Trust and Credit: The Mercantile Culture of Risk in Renaissance Italy

Renaissance Italy was a society in which the problems of how to trust and whom to trust presented perennial challenges; yet it also housed a vibrant, transcontinental, proto-capitalist economy that relied on trust for its functioning. This lecture explores how Renaissance Italian merchants confronted and attempted to manage the problems of trust and the particular mercantile culture that resulted from this: a culture that blended apparently modernizing elements - such as probabilistic reasoning - with what appear to twenty-first-century eyes as irrational beliefs, religious faith, and ideas about personal standing. At its center lay new conceptions of time and the future, which provoked anxieties and offered possibilities in equal measure. A lecture by Nicholas Baker, Macquarie University.
