These come in an invisible package of unearned credits and assets passed on generation after generation. Unlike the parents of children of color, who explicitly explain the rules of society with its limits and dangers, parents of white children needn't explain a thing. Their children grow up in a culture that affirms their worth and freedom, assuming the universality of their experience, seeing themselves as "normal" and others as "different." It is high time - indeed the time was long ago - to unmask and unpack this societal concept that feeds racism and perpetuates inequality.
