Screening | 2 Oscar-Winning Documentaries: Close Harmony / Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist

Close Harmony 1981. USA. Directed by Nigel Noble. After attending a stirring joint performance by the student chorus of Brooklyn Friends School and members of the Council Center for Senior Citizens in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Noble was inspired to tell the story of their annual collaboration. Going behind the scenes as the two choral groups prepare for their performance, Noble’s directorial debut demonstrates music’s ability to bridge divides and serve as common ground for different generations. 30 min. Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist (pictured) 1979. USA. Directed by Saul J. Turell. Narrated by Sidney Poitier. Using extensive archival footage, this biography recounts the rise and fall of Robeson’s career. An outspoken civil rights pioneer, Robeson broke through racial barriers on screen and stage with his noted performances as Othello and the Emperor Jones, as well as his concert tours in the U.S. and Europe. After WWII, his pro-Soviet views led to his blacklisting in America, and the State Department revoked his passport, ostensibly ending his career. Turell crafted this filmic tribute shortly after Robeson’s death, in 1976, in an effort to restore the reputation of a brilliant performer maligned by politics. 30 min.

Opening Reception | Photographs by Juergen Teller

Presented in three parts, this exhibition highlights three recent series, demonstrating Teller’s dynamic and diverse oeuvre. Featuring the controversial photographs of Kristen McMenamy and seductive portraits of Vivienne Westwood, juxtaposed with intimate portraits of his family and close friends, this exhibition displays an amalgam of subjects and personalities. The exhibition starts with Teller’s controversial series of photographs featuring Kristen McMenamy, shot in the home of Carlo Mollino. Drawing inspiration from the eccentric architect, Teller recalls Mollino’s fascination with the erotic, capturing McMenamy in provocative poses. Although the series garnered controversy for its alleged “pornographic” nature, it demonstrates Teller’s skilled storytelling and fearless approach to his medium.

Opening Reception | Sculptures & Works on Paper: New Work by Tom Friedman

This will be Friedman’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in New York since 2005. Friedman is known for his meticulously crafted sculptures and works on paper that inhabit the intersections between the ordinary and the monstrous, the infinitesimal and the infinite, the rational and the uncanny. His work skews perception and is often deceptive, its handmade intricacy is masked by a seemingly mass-produced or prefabricated appearance. Friedman’s deadpan presentation implies content and form are seamless; expectations are overturned as the viewer slowly perceives that chasm between illusion and reality. Shown: "Untitled," 2012, Styrofoam and paint, 13 x 16.5 x 11.5 inches.

Conference | The Tiger in You: Paper Tiger Television 30th Anniversary Celebration

What is radical media? What has it been in the past? What will it be in the future? For 30 years, the Paper Tiger Television (PTTV) video collective has inspired media-savvy community producers and activists around the world with shows that deliver critical analysis of the media, educate about the communications industry, and highlight issues ignored by mainstream information sources. In 1981 the Paper Tiger Collective, a group of artists, activists, and scholars, pioneered a radical public access show that challenged both the form and the content of broadcast television. Paper Tiger quickly developed a devoted following in the academic and activist communities and even in the art world. This two-day convention is part of the citywide 30th anniversary celebration of Paper Tiger Television. Coming on the heels of the Occupy Wall Street movement, this assembly promises new strategies for revolutionary media that will challenge alternative media makers to create a new methodology and product. The Museum of Modern Art plans to exhibit workshop projects created at the conference later this spring.

Concert | Aabaraki, Neo-Soul Band

Aabaraki exemplifies neo-soul at its best with tight songs that tease out the genre’s natural kinship with funk and hip-hop. A sparse arsenal of bass, keyboards, drums, and guitar give listeners plenty of room to enter into the groove, which carries everything from funky (and unlikely) covers of John Lennon and Bob Dylan to irreverent originals sung by frontman Akie Bermiss.
