This event provides the equipment, instruction, and oversight you need to experience a safe and fun afternoon of kayaking on the Hudson River. The program is beginner-friendly, and no prior experience is required. Participants must be at least 18 years old (or accompanied by a parent or guardian) and know how to swim. Come dressed to get wet! Lockers and locks will be provided to keep valuables dry, and on-site changing rooms will be available for use. Concert | Jamaican-Style Sound Clash 


This kind of competition between DJ crews for soundsystem dominance has long been a cornerstone of the island's sonic culture, with roots that stretch back to 1950s Kingston. The basic format has remained over seven decades: Two or more soundsystem crews—which typically include at least one selector and deejay (the Jamaican equivalent of an MC)—battle for crowd favor by playing both classic tunes and dubplates alongside the newest or most original reggae and dancehall tunes. Curated by Jive Poetic, this sound clash on the dancefloor features three soundsystems in competition: GT HIFI, King Civic Sound, and SOUNDPLEX. Opening Reception | Longings, Returns: Performance-Installation Drawing from Chinese Poetry


This exhibition features a performance by artist Sim Chi Yin, which takes its title from gui zhou, or “homeward-bound vessel." This is a recurring motif in classical Chinese poetry evoking an unfulfilled wish for return. This figure of longing becomes the lens to unsettle the intersecting geographies of forced migration and removal stemming from mass deportations in British-ruled Malaya. In her ongoing research, Sim complicates the historiography of the anti-colonial war in Malaya through photography, film, oral histories, and archival intervention. Together these materials reveal the mass deportation of over 30,000 people—mostly ethnic Chinese—from Malaya to China between 1948 and 1960 as a suppressed chapter of colonial counterinsurgency, waged under Cold War emergency legislation. This mass banishment survives only in the chain of paperwork the colonial state used to dispose of those it cast as leftists and their sympathizers.

The evening begins with Delius' ode to spring as a prelude to the New York premiere of a new work by Billy Childs, with featured soloists flutist Demarre McGill (Principal flute at the Seattle Symphony) and clarinetist Anthony McGill (Principal clarinet at the New York Philharmonic). Childs brings the flute and clarinet into lively conversation. Concert | Grammy-Winning Live Reggae Music for Jamaica Day 


The plaza becomes an island oasis for Jamaica Day, a celebration of the nation's many sounds and people. Headlining the evening's festivities is Black Uhuru, one of reggae’s most enduring acts. Led by founding member Derrick "Duckie" Simpson, Black Uhuru's blend of roots reggae, dub, and conscious lyricism has helped define reggae music for over 50 years, and won the group the inaugural GRAMMY Award for Best Reggae Album in the process. Today, Black Uhuru continues to uphold the legacy of roots reggae through new releases and captivating performances on international stages. There are two ways to access this event: 1. Celebrate the end of Jamaica Day with an experience hosted by DJ Max Glazer, the co-founder of NYC's own Federation Sound. A formidable force in the music world since 1999, Federation Sound has worked closely with many of the top names in Caribbean music, including Sean Paul, Shaggy, Mavado and Chronixx. As a producer, Glazer is responsible for Vybz Kartel's international hit "Whine (Wine)"; he’s toured with Rihanna for nearly half a decade as her musical director, appearing side-by-side with the megastar on MTV’s TRL, the Video Music Awards, Live with Regis & Kelly, All My Children, The Tyra Banks Show, and many more. He has performed at Wembley Arena, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Jamaica’s Sumfest stage, and played venues in Africa, Thailand, Trinidad, and Barbados.
