As part of the programming for Tuan Andrew Nguyen's artwork, The Light That Shines Through the Universe, this event features a lecture and guided meditation experience. Through this combination of intellectual and contemplative practice, this event invites audiences to pause, reflect, and consider the artwork's historical and philosophical themes through both thought and experience. Featuring a lecture by Donald S. Lopez, a distinguished university professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan. This session explores light in Buddhist thought—both literal and metaphorical. The lecture will be followed by a guided meditation by Jungwon Kim, a Zen practitioner of the Plum Village Tradition and the facilitator for Love Circle, a Brooklyn-based BIPOC sangha.

Workshop | An Afternoon of Community Rowing in New York Harbor
At this community rowing session, after a brief orientation, participants will be assigned to a crew with an experienced coxswain to steer the boat and a mixture of experienced and new rowers. The boats, Whitehall gigs, are stable, traditional working boats for four rowers and a coxswain. No experience is necessary and rowers of all ability levels are welcome! The rowing sessions last several hours and are designed to be excursions: groups row against the tide to a destination, take a break onshore or in a protected cove, then return home with the tide. For over 15 years, she has guided students of all ages through breath-centered, inquiry-based offerings that seek to harmonize the mind, body, and spirit. Pilin is passionate about building community and has taught workshops in the US and abroad. Book Discussion | Cultural Historian Shares Her New Book, Darkology: Blackface and the American Way of Entertainment
A discussion with Rhae Lynn Barnes on her recent book, Darkology. Karl Jacoby will join in conversation. About the book: A groundbreaking history, decades in the making, that chronicles how blackface dominated American society culturally, financially, and racially for nearly two centuries. Never before has the disturbing story of blackface and its piercing reflection of American society been so comprehensively told. With Darkology, Princeton historian Rhae Lynn Barnes meticulously unravels the complex, subterranean, and all-too-often expunged history of "Darkology"--the insidious study, commodification, and dehumanization of Black life, through which performers caricatured the enslaved and formerly enslaved for their supposed subservience and happy demeanor.

Concert | Indie/Folk Rock Band Lights Up the Stage
Hurray for the Riff Raff brings their poignant songs, most recently captured on their first live album Live Forever—to the stage. It's a homecoming for bandleader Alynda Segarra, who grew up in The Bronx before exploring New Orleans, Chicago, and beyond. Hurray for the Riff Raff's sound is equally expansive: broadly indie/folk rock, drawing on influences from contemporaries like Bright Eyes to legends like Lucinda Williams. Segarra, who serves as lead vocalist and principal songwriter, crafts lyrics that are both deeply personal and universal. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon for all.

Classical Music | Orchestral Works by Robert Schumann & More in a Major Concert Hall
The evening opens with a new work by rising composer Hannah Ishizaki, written in response to Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 1, performed by Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center. Conductor Jonathon Heyward then joins Ishizaki on stage for a conversation about the inspiration behind the piece and its connection to Schumann's music. Through discussion and musical excerpts from both works, audiences are invited into the creative process and the artistic dialogue between composer and orchestra. The evening culminates with a performance of Schumann's Symphony No. 1 in its entirety, bringing the journey full circle. Classical Music | Peabody Award-Winning Musicians Perform Contemporary Solos & Duets for Viola and Cello
Violist and conductor Nadia Sirota curates an evening of fresh ideas and groundbreaking voices in contemporary composition. Her singular sound and expressive execution have served as muse to dozens of composers, including Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, Marcos Balter, and David Lang. As a soloist, Sirota has performed with orchestras around the world, releasing four albums of commissioned music. She is a member of the chamber sextet yMusic and has appeared on records and concert stages with such artists as The National, David Bowie, Björk, Paul Simon, Ben Folds, and ANOHNI. For her headlining performance, Sirota will be joined by cellist Gabriel Cabezas to share a program of solos and duets written by a host of composers that includes Marcos Balter, Orlando Gibbons, Nico Muhly, and Alyssa Weinberg.
