Talk | Overlooked Gems Of Lower East Side History: The Fourth Ward and Knickerbocker Village

With David Bellel, Director of Educational Programming for the Lower East Side History Project. The Fourth Ward, today known as the "Two Bridges" neighborhood, was a rough, working-class, waterfront district which neighbored the infamous Five Points in the 19th century. Once one of the poorest and most hazardous slums in New York City, the neighborhood today still retains much of the grittiness and vibrancy of old-fashioned NYC, as gentrification has yet to overwhelm the area. An integral part of the Fourth Ward is a housing project with a rich and fascinating history known as Knickerbocker Village. It was the first apartment development in New York City to receive federal funding (and in fact the first such housing development in the country), having been completed as a project of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.
