Concert | West African-Style Percussive Art

The language of West African percussive art presents challenges to the Western musician: the music is not overtly counted, written, nor often played the same way twice. Artists draw from tradition, yet are expected to create their own style, and to improvise in that style. The featured instrument, the gyil, is played by the Lobi, Waala, Sissala, and Dagara nations of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso.

Musical | The Elementary Spacetime Show: Surreal, Existential Musical (Ages 16+)

In the opening moments of The Elementary Spacetime Show, a young girl, Alameda, attempts to take her own life. She is drawn into a tunnel that deposits her into a liminal void somewhere between life and death. Alameda is faced with an awkward challenge: in order to die,she must play and win a game show. The girl clashes with a depressed mosquito, confronts her doppelganger's self-loathing, and adopts a piece of rhubarb as a confidante. Things only get stranger from there. Across the unfolding drama, a queer kinship builds between the unlikely friends she meets in limbo. The Elementary Spacetime Show is a touching and surreal new musical by Jonathan Larson Award-winning composer and lyricist Cesar Alvarez, with a book by Alvarez and Emily Orling that offers possible answers about why we exist, even when you feel alone. Playbill says that Elementary Spacetime "bends the rules of space and time to grapple with suicide and the stigma tethered to it." Please note: This performance contains adult themes and strong language. Audience discretion is advised; this show is intended for ages 16+. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.
