Discussion | A Greek Holocaust Survivor Speaks

More than 80% of Greek Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. Among them were the father, sister, mother, and baby brother of Solomon Kofinas, a survivor from Athens and a leader of Kehilah Kedosha Janina, New York’s Greek synagogue. Kofinas was born in 1936 in Athens. After the Nazi invasion of Greece in 1941, Kofinas and his older brother fled to the outskirts of the city, where they hid with the help of Greek Orthodox Christians and later with distant family members. They never saw their immediate family again. In 1955, Kofinas emigrated to New York, where he married another Holocaust survivor and started a family of his own. Now a grandfather and great-grandfather, he has served as a gabbai and lay leader at KKJ for more than 50 years. This program with Kofinas explores his story of loss, survival, and rescue in Greece.

Play | Larry and Lucy: Drama Reminiscent of Midnight Cowboy, Whitnail and I

Reminiscent in tone of classic films like "Midnight Cowboy" and "Whitnail & I," Larry & Lucy is about two emotionally wounded outsiders struggling to find a sense of place in the world. The play touches on the themes of loneliness, togetherness and the continuing opiate crisis in America. Larry is a worn-out, 63-year-old street muralist who now barely supports his meager, one room Hollywood existence by driving for Uber. Lucy is a fragile Kansas City teen runaway looking to beat a heroin addiction. After a few chance meetings the two embark on a series of misadventures that help them gain insight into their troubled lives, yet also reminds them of the difficulties they'll face when trying to overcome their deep rooted afflictions.

Staged Reading | The Half-Life of Marie Curie: The Power of Female Friendship

In 1911, Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. By 1912, she was the object of ruthless gossip over an alleged affair with the married Frenchman Paul Langevin, all but erasing her achievements from public memory. Weakened and demoralized by the press lambasting her as a "foreign" Jewish temptress and a home-wrecking traitor, Marie agrees to join her friend and colleague Hertha Ayrton, an electromechanical engineer and suffragette. The play revels in the power of female friendship as it explores the relationship between these two brilliant women, both of whom are mothers, widows, and fearless champions of scientific inquiry.
