There's Always Time for Music

December 01, 2015

In between your holiday shopping, your holiday decorating and your holiday parties, there's still time to go to concerts.

One long-standing New York City December tradition is the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. The one-hour program on December 24 features the pianist Emanuel Ax as soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2. On December 28, the soloist is the prize-winning violinist Jinjoo Cho performing the Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky. Works by Schubert and Barber round out that program. The conductor Jaime Laredo leads this venerable training program for exceptionally accomplished musicians, age 16 to 23, from all over the country. Tickets are available through Carnegie Hall.

Another decades-long tradition in New York is the Paul Winter's Winter Solstice concert in the grand space at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. This year's edition features performers from Brazil and a dance-percussion ensemble, in addition to the soprano saxophonist Paul Winter and a host of other performers. December 17, 18 and 19, ticket information at Paul Winter's website.

One more tradition around here, though relatively new, is the Twelfth Night Festival put on by Trinity Wall Street. There are performances every day December 26–January 6 at St. Paul's Chapel and Trinity Church, and all the events are free, except for Handel's Messiah and The Play of Daniel performances. Programs include Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols, Christmas music of Latin America, Franz Schubert's Winterreise and more. Details on Trinity Wall Street's website.

On December 28, it's P.D.Q. Bach: The Golden Anniversary at The Town Hall. Professor Peter Schickele has been making people laugh with his hysterical take on classical music for fifty years, since that first performance in 1965. A play-by-play account of Beethoven's 5th symphony, the Uptown Hoedown and excerpts from Oedipus Tex are featured, performed by the New York Pick Up Ensemble led by Jorge Mester, semi-conductor. Tickets for purchase at The Town Hall's website.

Have a great holiday season! I'll see you at the concert hall.
