Jazz | Mike Phillips, Jazz Saxophonist


Discovered by Stevie Wonder at the legendary Wilson’s jazz club at the age of 16, Mike Phillips has gone on to record two chart-topping albums and has been nominated for several musical awards; including an NAACP Image Award. Since then, he has collaborated and played along side of music’s biggest acts; including Prince, P. Diddy, Herbie Hancock, Brian McKnight and Jill Scott, in addition to many high-profile events including, Nelson Mandela’s 80th Birthday Bash and Oprah Winfrey’s 50th birthday, to name a few. His third studio recording, entitled M.P.3, features Wonder, Norman Brown and Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart. The first single, “Think I’m Gonna Miss You” debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Jazz Radio Chart.

A three-part theater piece about nostalgia, punk rock, the legacy of activism, and kids who burn down malls. It starts with three monologues by 40-year-old men in a bar, who reminisce to a silent boy about their glory years in unknown bands. Later the boy hooks up with a nice vegan squatter girl, and together they go around the country wreaking havoc on the empty shells of shopping centers. Eventually they take it too far. Years later, they reminisce to the audience about their glory crimes in unknown towns.

Ahomeka Southerland was born in 1961 in New York City to a large family. His three older sisters followed their mother’s artistic path and he studied and copied their art as well. By the time he was 12 years old, one of his sisters gave him a “How To Draw Horses” book that he studied intently. Later in high school, he took art classes in which he learned some basic art techniques.
