In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend ... more >> in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place at 10am and 11am.

In early nineteenth-century Italian opera, characters explicitly described as old are mostly a prerogative ... more >> of comedy. In serious melodramma, the advanced age of some characters may be inferred by virtue of their role (father and grandfather, pastor), but only rarely is it explicitly stated, verbally or visually. In Verdi’s operas, conversely, old age emerges as a fundamental concern—one that is referred to explicitly and frequently in passages of poetry and other verbal indicators (such as cast pages and stage directions). In this lecture, Francesco Izzo of the University of Southampton explores the theme of old age in Verdi’s operas from 1839 to 1867, drawing in particular on Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, Nabucco, I lombardi alla prima crociata, Ernani, I due Foscari, Rigoletto, La traviata, and Don Carlos.

During the Algerian Revolution (1954–1962), French army officers tested a number of military strategies, ... more >> theorized them, called them Modern Warfare, and exported them to North and South America. The talk discusses the genealogies and spatial ramifications of these practices and theories, as well as their dissemination in the USA during and after the Algerian Revolution. It scrutinizes the scholarship of French military officer David Galula at Harvard University in the 1960s and demystifies The Battle of Algiers and its screening at the Pentagon in 2003. Speaker Samia Henni was born in Algiers, Algeria. She works at the intersection of architecture, planning, colonial practices, and military operations from the early 19th century up to the present day. Her book Architecture of Counterrevolution: The French Army in Northern Algeria, examines French colonial territorial transformations and spatial counterinsurgency measures in Algeria under colonial rule during the Algerian Revolution (1954-1962).
