May is Chamber Music Month

Gail Wein
May 06, 2016

May is Chamber Music Month, and our concert schedule abounds with string quartets and other small groups in performance. Chamber Music America kicks off the month with a free concert featuring Del Sol String Quartet, Greg Lewis Organ Monk Quintet and more at National Sawdust in Williamsburg on May 2.

Franz Josef "Papa" Haydn wrote 68 string quartets, and - as of May 12 - the Attaca Quartet will have performed every single one of them. Don't miss their concert at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the final edition of their six year-long project. Suggested donation is accepted at the door.

Another of my favorite string quartets, JACK Quartet, has three dates booked in May in New York: on May 6th at the Look and Listen Festival, performing a work by the Pulitzer prize-winner John Luther Adams (free admission), on May 7th at the Americas Society, performing music by Filipe Lara (free for members, tickets available on line and at the door for non-members), and on May 23 at the 92nd Street Y, the first concert of the New York Philharmonic Biennial (tickets available through 92Y).

As in its first edition in 2014, the New York Philharmonic Biennial is full of great music and lots of premieres. Performances include everything from a solo violin recital with Jennifer Koh at National Sawdust (May 24 and 31), the opera "The Importance of Being Ernest" (June 2, 3 and 4), three different programs featuring Gyorgy Ligeti's music at the Met Museum (June 3, 4 and 5), Alan Gilbert conducting the NY Philharmonic in two different programs on June 10 and 11, and a number of other worthwhile events. Ticket information is on the NY Phil website.

If you're up for some high-quality free concerts, here are some good ones to check out this month:
On May 7, the New Century Jazz Quintet performs at Fort Washington Collegiate Church (West 181st Street at Fort Washington Ave), presented by Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra.

East Coast Chamber Orchestra performs at Music Mondays on May 16 at Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway at 93rd Street. It's the final concert of the season for this great series; keep an eye out for details about next season.

And, the New York Philharmonic gives its 25th Annual Free Memorial Day Concert at St. John's Cathedral on Monday, May 30. The concert features Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and baritone Thomas Hampson.?
