If you live in New York City, then you know that the metropolis abounds in great live classical music. With both amazing local talent and visiting artists who make New York a regular stop on their tours, we have an especially rich number of offerings.
Coming up this month, I am particularly excited about the Australian Chamber Orchestra's appearance at (Le) Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village on March 20. They are one of the finest string orchestras in the world, and they don't come to the US all that often. The program ranges from Bach to Nirvana, and you can sip a drink while you're enjoying the music.
Also, Kronos Quartet performs at Carnegie Hall on March 28. This west coast foursome has been around for 40 years, and gained popular attention by performing music by Jimi Hendrix and other unlikely repertoire for classical string quartet. Kronos has made their name by being innovators in contemporary concert music, which they present in a passionate and accessible manner.
Our hometown band extroardinaire, the New York Philharmonic, has a terrific program coming up, March 20, 21, 22 and 25. Piano fans will enjoy the multi-tasking talents of Jeffrey Kahane as he conducts the Ravel and the Gershwin piano concertos from the keyboard. Two more glittering works for piano and orchestra would be hard to find, much less on the same concert.
