Screening | Red Flag of the Future: Political Puppet Opera Film


Mixed media artist Gaylia Wagner created a cast of 20 puppets to enact the dream scenes in a filmed version of a new opera. The puppets are made of found and repurposed objects and trash — food containers, soap bottles, tape, paint, and more. The film presents an original opera setting and a new translation of Masse Mensch, a seven-scene play by antifascist playwright Ernst Toller, written over 100 years ago while he was a political prisoner.

In this film, four Ainu elders tell the story of how the Ainu people were made to hide their cultural identity as they assimilated into broader Japan. It also shows their own life experience as Ainu (an Indigenous ethnic group in parts of Japan and Russia), as well as teaching their traditions to the younger generation. The documentary showcases Ainu rituals, customs, songs, and dances that have been passed on for hundreds of years, and it is one of the only films that present modern day Ainu life. Racial tensions grow in a Brooklyn neighborhood on the hottest day of the summer, while everyone tries to cope with the heat. Lee has received numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Peabody Awards, as well as nominations for three Golden Globes and a Grammy Award. Guests are welcome to bring their own food for picnicking and encouraged to support nearby park concessions and neighborhood restaurants. Popcorn, water, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages (for those 21+) will be available for sale on-site. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets or small soft cushions, but reminded that lawn chairs and dogs are not permitted on the lawn, and glass bottles and outside alcohol are never allowed in the park.
