Lecture | Explore the World of the Human Embryo

The talk explores the historical relationships that exist between the development and the evolution of embryos. What is the link between our developmental origin as individuals (a fertilized egg), on the one hand, and our evolutionary origin as a group of individuals (an ancestral population), on the other hand? And these embryos, are they really extraordinary constructions relying on carefully accumulated, multiple sets of precisely encoded instructions or instead, could they be the mere and only obligatory result of a chaotic program haphazardly built during the past hundreds million years?

Author Reading | Austrian Writer Martin Prinz Shares His New Novel, The Last Days

Enjoy a reading by Austrian writer Martin Prinz from his novel The Last Days, followed by a conversation with Bernadette Wegenstein, Professor of Media Studies and Director for Advanced Media Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Book Synopsis: Set in April 1945 near Vienna, The Last Days reconstructs a Nazi society in its final weeks, when the war was almost over but the killings continued. Drawing on trial records and contemporary documents, Prinz examines a series of executions carried out by Nazi summary courts against individuals accused of defeatism and desertion. Written in the restrained language of court transcripts, the book confronts questions of individual responsibility, arbitrary power, and the long silence that followed these crimes in Austria. In the final 41 days of the war, more people were murdered in Austria than in the previous seven years. Among the victims were the granddaughters of Olga Waissnix, the muse of Arthur Schnitzler. Two years later, the perpetrators appeared before a people’s court, defending their actions as lawful and invoking obedience to a state that had already ceased to exist. With sober precision, Prinz revisits these events and reflects on literature as a form of remembrance.

Concert | Singer-Songwriter David Rivera Brings Caribbean Tropical Rhythms to the Stage

Hear a concert from David Rivera, a singer-songwriter, drummer, and leader of the band La Bambula. Rivera has developed a sound with universal appeal, centered on the fusion of Caribbean tropical rhythms with elements of modern music. In his own words: "I don't define my music within a single category; rather, it's a fusion that weaves together hip-hop beats, funk, R&B, and touches of electronic music with the echoes of 1970s salsa and the rich Caribbean and Puerto Rican tradition--perfect for jazz lovers, dancers, and even for the heart." Setting the stage is Discolocas, a club night established in March 2022 to provide a safe, supportive space where women selectors and DJs could feel comfortable sharing their vinyl selections. Expect to be moved by everything from vintage rumba, salsa, and cumbia to experimental sounds.

Concert | Reinventing Tradition: Ensemble Works by Castello & Berio

This program, curated by The Juilliard School professor and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Emi Ferguson, spotlights the works of two pioneering Italian composers, Dario Castello (1602-1631) and Luciano Berio (1925-2003). Before dying at 29 to the bubonic plague, Castello was integral to the revitalization of early Baroque music, transforming the Renaissance canzona into the sonata. Berio, beginning with the groundbreaking Sequenzas (1958 to 2002), reimagined the very foundations of performance, form, and sound for the 20th century. Heard together, these trailblazers offer proof of how "new" music continually reinvents tradition. This evening's Castello and Berio showcase will feature Ferguson on flute, Matthew Aucoin (AMOC* co-founder and MacArthur Fellow) on piano and percussion, and a formidable string trio of AMOC* core ensemble members that includes violinist/violist Miranda Cuckson, violinist Keir GoGwilt, and cellist Coleman Itzkoff. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.
