Lecture | Masters of Modern Art: Giorgio de Chirico

Maestro Francesco Santoro, art history scholar and world-renowned visual artist, will present one of four public lectures and discussions (in Italian with simultaneous English translation) on the masters of modern art: Picasso, Van Gogh, Gauguin and De Chirico. Santoro will focus on the life and work of these artists who broke with traditions in response to changes in the world around them. Santoro in his lectures highlights, through space-time connections and documentary evidence, that what they tried after the breakup with traditional painting, was to make art survive through the research of a new language. They were infected by "the willingness to remake the world." They wanted to analyze systematically the phenomenon of “perception,” creating a Science of Art. They wanted to show that what matters in the artwork is knowledge; they wanted to communicate that the project of an artwork is already a work of art.

With four albums released under the name Deserts Xuan in her earlier days as an alternative singer-songwriter, Anpu was repeatedly reviewed as Best Songwriter, Best Album, Best Producer, Best Recording and Song of the Year, while receiving different awards in both the Chinese and Taiwanese music industries. Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Aristophanes' Lysistrata

Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, Aristophanes' Lysistrata is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace—a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society. This outdoor production, subtitled "Let's Make America Great Again," is adapted and directed by Susane Lee. June 30-July 24, Thursday through Sunday nights.

Concert | Eclectic Sounds: The Wood Brothers / Aoife O'Donovan / Hiss Golden Messenger

A night of sublime harmonies and extraordinary musicianship, headlined by “masters of soulful folk” (Paste) The Wood Brothers. Comprised of brothers Oliver and Chris and the percussionist Jano Rix, the band released its first studio album, Ways Not to Lose, on Blue Note Records in 2006. Aoife O'Donovan has been a powerful presence in the world of American folk since her teens when she founded the progressive bluegrass band Crooked Still. Always a sought after collaborator — she appears on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, a project that features Chris Thile, Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and is one-third of the project I’m With Her with Sarah Jarosz and Sara Watkins — she has become an extraordinary solo artist. The shape-shifting M.C. Taylor, a.k.a. Hiss Golden Messenger, a North Carolina musician with a voice that’s “craggy and wounded, but it soars in his broken sort of way,” (Stereogum) kicks off the evening with a solo set.
