Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Opening Reception | André Cepeda's At the Eyes' Ground: First Solo Show by the Portuguese Photographer

Cepeda’s flash-saturated, careful but quirky compositions challenge the contemporary notion of photography as automatic, instantaneous and objective. For example, he resists the obvious urge to capture landscapes with a horizontal frame, and shoots them vertically. The resulting space is not large enough to allow full viewer immersion; we are made hyperaware of the photograph’s two-dimensionality and of the process of its making. Denied the instant gratification of “entering” the picture and “identifying” with its subject, we are forced to examine them on their own terms.

Performance | Manhattan Shakespeare Project presents Al-'ukhraa: A Study in Othello

Manhattan Shakespeare Project is back with a very personal piece created in part with NYC’s young Muslim high school women. Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Aristophanes' Lysistrata

Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, Aristophanes' Lysistrata is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace—a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society. This outdoor production, subtitled "Let's Make America Great Again," is adapted and directed by Susane Lee. June 30-July 24, Thursday through Sunday nights.

Algerian rock and raï god Rachid Taha’s music embraces “heart-stopping break beats, flamenco guitar, African choruses, crunching hard rock, and the inevitable sappy love song” (Japan Times) — every show seems to be a party the whole world is invited to. The colorful feast of mind-blowing grooves served up by Krar Collective — and the massive sound they make as a trio, based around the traditional krar harp, percussion, and soaring vocal harmonies — has earned them the nickname “The Ethiopian White Stripes.” Based in London, they’re sending shock waves through the world music scene.

Jazz | The Ghost Train Orchestra performs overlooked music from the 1920s and 1930s

The Ghost Train Orchestra is a Brooklyn-based jazz and instrumental band led by Brian Carpenter. The band formed in 2006 when an historic theater in Boston commissioned Carpenter as musical director for its 90th year celebration. For the commission, Carpenter transcribed and arranged a set of overlooked music from late 1920s Chicago and Harlem and formed a side project from his regular band Beat Circus to perform it. The following year the group started performing under the name Ghost Train Orchestra. The band's repertoire features Carpenter's rearrangements and often avant-garde treatments of obscure music from the 1920s and 1930s. Much of the source material is culled from found 78s and rediscoveries by music historians and collectors such as Mitchell Kaba and Irwin Chusid.
