Opening Reception | Exhibition: 2016 Summer Open: Photography Is Magic

The 2016 Summer Open was a call for contributions to the idea of photography as a magical form. This optimistic premise attracted a diverse scope of magical contemporary approaches—from pictures found in the happenstance of everyday life to elaborate stagings of studio or desktop experiments. The photographic practices represented in the final selection are rich with vitality and deep curiosity for the magical medium of photography. They share a fascination with and substantial knowledge of the historical roots and the contemporary state of photography. These artists actively play with the medium’s heritage—re-animating and re-contextualizing its alchemical properties—to render ideas about its contemporary material value. Participating photographers: Delaney Allen, Syl Arena, Lucy Wood Baird, Stella Baraklianou, Amelia Bauer, G. Roland Biermann, Thom Bridge, Radek Brousil, Drew Brown, Bubi Canal, Ellen Carey, Jesse Chehak, Joseph Desler Costa, Adam Ekberg, Annabel Elgar, Ailbhe Greaney, Valerie Green, Jill Greenberg, Aaron Hegert, Matthew Herrmann, Sheree Hovsepian, Noah Jackson, Jessica Labatte, Dionne Lee, Matthew Leifheit and Cynthia Talmadge, Jo Longhurst, Jason Lukas, Chris Maggio, Irene Mamiye, William Miller, Chris Mottalini, Deepanjan Mukhopadhyay, Jennifer Niederhauser Schlup, Zachary Norman, Ryan Oskin, Megan Paetzhold, Meghann Riepenhoff, Anastasia Samoylova, Michael Schmid, Marco Scozzaro, Katie Shapiro, Tabitha Soren, Jessica Thalmann, Sonja Thomsen, Patricia Voulgaris, Marta Wlusek, Guanyu Xu, Hyounsang Yoo, Junsheng Zhou

Workshop | Intro Class: The Alchemy of the Chakras

With: Thomas Amelio. One of the most powerful and complete means for awakening, healing and transformation is chakra practice. Central to the yoga tradition, chakras are spiritual, psychological and emotional energy centers that exist within the human subtle body. In this class we will explore the unique purpose and function of each chakra. Ideally each works in harmony with the rest; however, for most, their full expression is hampered by long-held negative conditionings and suppressions (karmas). This results in a disharmony of function—for example, a fifth chakra calling to self-express and have our talents shine can be inhibited by a first chakra fear of losing safety and security.

Bring a blanket. Bring a picnic. They perform rain or shine. They will never cancel a show before showtime. So come on out! Bring a slicker, bring an umbrella. Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Aristophanes' Lysistrata

Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, Aristophanes' Lysistrata is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace—a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society. This outdoor production, subtitled "Let's Make America Great Again," is adapted and directed by Susane Lee. June 30-July 24, Thursday through Sunday nights.

Film | The Triplets of Belleville: Animated French Film with a Live Score

The unclassifiable, richly imagined film — a fantastical caper involving the Tour de France, the French Mafia, a kidnapping, and a wily grandmother and her faithful dog — becomes a wild spectacle featuring dancing, singing, foley sound effects, and the original hot swing score performed live by its composer Benoît Charest and his 9-piece Orchestre Terrible de Belleville band. Also playing: Jessica Fichot, whose “sound is cosmic cabaret, a delicious blend of acoustic styles delivered with syncopated verve,” (SF Chronicle) opens the show. The chanteuse/songwriter draws from her French/Chinese/American heritage and her youth in Paris to create a delicious blend of French chanson, gypsy jazz, and international folk.
