For a few short days every spring, New Yorkers are invited to enter the fascinating world of some of Manhattan’s finest artists. Now in its 16th year, The TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour (TOAST) is an open invitation to the public to take a free, self-guided tour through artists’ studios in TriBeCa. TOAST attendees are able to visit the artists’ studios, view their work and talk to the artists themselves. Those who take the tour will also have the chance to purchase work directly from the artists, helping to support them in the pursuit of their craft. This year, the 15th Annual TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour features approximately a 100 artists of varying genres and will be held in 36 different buildings in TriBeCa. The tour will also take participants through TriBeCa art galleries and exhibits, including those at the New York Academy of Art.

The IBLA Grand Prize International Music Competition, celebrating this year its 21st anniversary, has become one of the world’s cultural treasures. Held each year in the quietly beautiful and charming Baroque city of Ragusa-Ibla, this competition has proven to be a consistent and world-class showcase for musical talent of the highest order. The competition’s founder, Dr. Salvatore Moltisanti, himself a pianist, has created an atmosphere thatencourages openness to any and all forms of music, allowing presentations of all musical styles as well as instruments (this hasincluded several types of jazz ensembles, domra virtuosos, accordionists, folk singers and many others from outside the classical mainstream, as well as instrumental and vocal performers of standard and contemporary repertoire), and creating a place where the ideas of wonderfully talented people can be nurtured in a spirit of international respect.

Speaker Akram Zaatari was born in 1966 in Saida, Lebanon. With a practice rooted deeply in the research of Middle Eastern photographic practices, Zaatari is interested in looking at the present through past photographic records. His work reflects on the shifting nature of borders and the production and circulation of images within the context of the current political divisions in the Middle East. Zaatari has participated in the Istanbul Biennale (2011); Torino Triennale (2008); 52nd Venice Biennale (2007); and Biennales of Gwangju, Sydney, and São Paolo (2006); as well as been exhibited in such international venues as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; Munich Kunstverein; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and MUSAC, Leon. He is author of more than 40 videos, including Nature Morte (2008), In This House (2005), This Day (2003), and All Is Well on the Border (1997). Since 1999, Zaatari has been researching the photographic archive of Studio Shehrazade in Saida, Lebanon, studying, indexing, and presenting the work of the photographer Hashem el Madani (1928–) as a register of social relationships and of photographic practices. Zaatari is the co-founder of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut, and lives and works in Beirut.

County Down is a cross-platform, episodic, digital film that explores an epidemic of psychosis among the adults in a gated community that coincides with a teenage girl’s invention of a designer drug. Mirroring rave culture and the unbridled optimism in technology of the 1990’s, County Down presents a society so obsessed with novelty and consumerism that it euphorically embraces its own destruction.

Yale University’s Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415, The Juilliard School’s period instrument ensemble, join forces to perform Haydn’s great oratorio. The concert will be conducted by Masaaki Suzuki, the pre-eminent conductor of early music from Japan. Haydn was most likely inspired to compose a large oratorio during his visits to England in 1791–1792 and 1794–1795, when he heard oratorios of Handel performed by large forces. Completed in 1798, The Creation took one and one half years to write, the longest amount of time Haydn had spent on a single composition. What resulted was one of the greatest sacred masterpieces from the classical era.
