Concert | IBLA Foundation Winners in Their New York Debuts

The IBLA Grand Prize International Music Competition, celebrating this year its 21st anniversary, has become one of the world’s cultural treasures. Held each year in the quietly beautiful and charming Baroque city of Ragusa-Ibla, this competition has proven to be a consistent and world-class showcase for musical talent of the highest order. The competition’s founder, Dr. Salvatore Moltisanti, himself a pianist, has created an atmosphere thatencourages openness to any and all forms of music, allowing presentations of all musical styles as well as instruments (this hasincluded several types of jazz ensembles, domra virtuosos, accordionists, folk singers and many others from outside the classical mainstream, as well as instrumental and vocal performers of standard and contemporary repertoire), and creating a place where the ideas of wonderfully talented people can be nurtured in a spirit of international respect.

Screening | Laura Parnes’s County Down (2011): Drugged and Loving It

County Down is a cross-platform, episodic, digital film that explores an epidemic of psychosis among the adults in a gated community that coincides with a teenage girl’s invention of a designer drug. Mirroring rave culture and the unbridled optimism in technology of the 1990’s, County Down presents a society so obsessed with novelty and consumerism that it euphorically embraces its own destruction.

Concert | Haydn's Great Oratorio The Creation

Yale University’s Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415, The Juilliard School’s period instrument ensemble, join forces to perform Haydn’s great oratorio. The concert will be conducted by Masaaki Suzuki, the pre-eminent conductor of early music from Japan. Haydn was most likely inspired to compose a large oratorio during his visits to England in 1791–1792 and 1794–1795, when he heard oratorios of Handel performed by large forces. Completed in 1798, The Creation took one and one half years to write, the longest amount of time Haydn had spent on a single composition. What resulted was one of the greatest sacred masterpieces from the classical era.
