Lecture | Fathers and Sons in Hamlet

Shakespeare’s preoccupation with the father-son nexus in Hamlet is reflected in early modern English society more largely, where a plethora of texts on the family appeared during the 16th and 17th centuries. This talk will focus on two kinds of these didactic texts: the middle-class family treatise, written by ministers seeking to define the newly Protestant family; and the humanist princely treatise, authored variously by kings and court intellectuals, which articulated one important vision of ruling. Speaker Margaret Mikesell Tabb is professor of English at John Jay College (CUNY). An editor of Juan Luis Vives’ Instruction of a Christen Woman (1523), she writes on early modern gender in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

Discussion | The Future Is Short: Storytelling in the Digital Age, with Oscar-Nominated Director Morgan Spurlock

As the Internet and other platforms like Hulu, Netflix, Yahoo!, and the New York Times become more commercially viable as distribution outlets for good stories told through film, the opportunities for creating original short-form content have never been bigger, or more lucrative. What do content producers want from original episodic or serial programs, and how do filmmakers who've dipped their toes in short-form storytelling, even as brief as three minutes, feel about the work they've done? Where might it all be headed? Join CINELAN co-founder Morgan Spurlock (Mansome), filmmaker Annie Sundberg (Knuckleball!), Jason Spingarn-Koff of the New York Times Op-Docs series, YouTube's Director of Content Partnerships Laura Lee, and others to discuss the power, art, and business of short-form storytelling.
