Discussion | Based on the Book

Successfully adapting a book to a film can be a challenging task. What are the elements that can best translate from the page to the screen? How faithful must the adaptation be to the original work? Is it possible to create a version of the story better than the book? TFF filmmakers Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Headshot), Charles Matthau (Freaky Deaky), Donald Rice (Cheerful Weather for the Wedding), and more discuss their experiences adapting fiction to film. Moderated by Mark Adams (pictured), Chief Film Critic and Reviews Editor for Screen International.

Talk | Earth Day: A Call to Spiritual Activation

A TALK AND CONVERSATION WITH WORLD RENOWN ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST JULIA BUTTERFLY HILL. Mother Earth is calling us to awaken and ACTIVATE our highest potential to live lives of effective service. Join in a talk and conversation with Julia Butterfly Hill around uncovering and unlocking our gifts and transforming our blocks and challenges into our greatest contributions. Julia Butterfly Hill brought international attention to the plight of the world's last remaining ancient forests when she climbed 180 feet into the branches of a 1000 year-old redwood tree and refused to come down. Her historic protest to the environmental destruction caused by the clear-cutting of ancient redwoods culminated after 738 days with a negotiated agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree known as Luna and a 3 acre buffer-zone around it. Julia Butterfly Hill is an activist, a writer and a poet. She is the author of the national best seller The Legacy of Luna and the co-author of One Makes The Difference, both published by Harper SanFrancisco. The audio release, Spiritual Activation, captures Julia's vital message as it is given at standing-room-only appearances across the country. All of Julia's books (and the packaging for the CD) have been published with 100% post-consumer recycled paper with soy-based inks and chlorine-free processing, insisting on a higher standard of ecological sustainability in the publishing industry.

Screening | Korean Film: Hong Sang-soo's Oki's Movie (2010)

Documentary and narrative filmmaking elegantly merge in Oki's Movie, a quartet of interlocking vignettes by Korean auteur director Hong Sang-soo and one of the most elegant films of his oeuvre. A young woman hikes Seoul's Mount Acha twice, accompanied by different boyfriends: one a fellow student, the other a professor. She documents the trips and then edits together corresponding locations on the mountain: the parking lot, a small pavilion, a wooden bridge; her juxtapositions are revelatory, both of her relationship with each and of the power of cinema.
