Concert | Baroque Ensemble Repast performs works by Buxtehude and Bach

Baroque Ensemble Repast performs music by Erlebach, Buxtehude, and J.S. Bach. Repast delves into the fourth year of its "Bach and Before" project, putting Bach in context by exploring the generation of German composers which preceded and influenced him. The sophisticated craftsmanship and exuberant lyricism of Dietrich Buxtehude, Philippe Heinrich Erlebach, and their contemporaries set a precedent for Bach's later masterpieces. Acclaimed by the New York Times for its "vital performances" and “robust” playing, Repast is a collaboration of three period-instrument virtuosi presenting vivid renditions of music of the baroque era. Repast members Amelia Roosevelt (baroque violin), John Mark Rozendaal (baroque violoncello and viola da gamba), and Avi Stein (harpsichord), each have active careers in historical performance and bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the trio’s programs. Repast enjoys frequent and fruitful collaborations with leading period instrument players and vocalists in order to explore the vast, masterful repertoire of the baroque era. The group’s name, meaning a meal or a feast, is a double-entendre: out of the revival of past music comes a delectable, spiritually nourishing experience.

Opening Reception | Collages: K-narf's Yummy Yami

Inspired by the true and fascinating story of Issei Sagawa, a Japanese man who engaged in acts of cannibalism while living in Paris and then became a minor celebrity upon his return to Japan, K-narf pushes the limits of how sex is portrayed in art—creating a jarring dialogue between images and the story behind them. Yummy Yami is a series of collages—Diptych Photograffiti—made from photographs of window displays of old pornographic movie theaters in Tokyo and shots taken in French butcher shops. With the juxtaposition of images of raw meat and softcore erotica, Yummy Yami evokes the same discomfort as Sagawa’s story.

Many know the story of Jesse Owens and his dramatic triumph at the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany, but there is much more to the story, as seen in this documentary produced and directed by Laurens Grant, the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker behind Freedom Riders. While he was instantly deemed a national hero overseas, Owens returned home to a country still fraught with racial tension, where he couldn’t even ride at the front of a bus. His story is one of overcoming obstacles, rising from the son of a sharecropper to a world champion. The groundbreaking documentary airs nationally three weeks later on May 1 on PBS as part of the American Experience series.
