A hands-on, creative session experimenting with blackout poetry and art. Sometimes called erasure poetry, blackout poetry involves removing words from an existing text to reveal a poem hidden within. After creating poems, participants will design collaged backgrounds to frame and enhance their work.

Tour | Haunted Photowalk through the NYC Streets
A thrilling afternoon where organizers literally put the 'boo' in 'bounced light' and turn those scary shadows into bold, beautiful portraits. From Fear to Flash Express (30-Min Crash Course): Before hitting the haunted streets, the group will kick things off with a power-packed classroom session to demystify flash photography. You'll learn a fast, no-fuss process that'll help you conquer your fear and take control of your lighting-even in the darkest corners of the city. NYC Costume Photowalk: Once you've armed yourself with knowledge (and maybe some garlic), the group will head out into the urban night for a hands-on photowalk featuring a killer model, dramatic vibes, and endless street-style inspiration. Whether you're lighting under streetlamps or creating ghoulishly good shadows, every attendee will get their chance to direct, shoot, and shine. - Open to all levels, especially the flash-curious and the flash-fearful. - Bring your camera, but don't worry about the lighting equipment, as organizers will be bringing a set of strobes and triggers that will guide the group away from badly lit portraits. - Costumes encouraged (but not required)- because let's be real, everything's more fun with a cape.

Opening Reception | The Last Avant-Garde: Kotlyarov-Tolsty’s Vivrism in Mail Art and Letters -- Solo Avant-Garde Exhibition
A mail art exhibition. Mail art was a movement that embraced sending small-scale works through the postal service – was pioneered in the 1950s by the American artist Ray Johnson and was later embraced by artists associated with Fluxus and other experimental networks. Many of these rebellious artists were dissatisfied with other modernist movements that too readily allowed themselves to be absorbed into museums and the commercial art market. They sought a new form of presentation for their art that was noncollectible and noncommercial – using the postal system as a decentralized gallery and a means of communication and exchange. Mail art held particular appeal for international dissident communities, especially for Russian émigré artists in the 1980s. For them, it was a novel form of avant-garde art that truly returned them to their roots. They were animated by something akin to Kazimir Malevich’s conviction that art ought to be “an activity free from all economic, practical, and religious ideologies.”

Classical Music | Classical Indian Works for Santoor & Tabla (In Person AND Online!)
This concert, from Vinay Desai, will begin with a meditative melodic improvisation that takes the listeners to a place of deep stillness. Once the mood of the raag (melody) is set and the ambience built, the tabla player will join Desai in creating powerful rhythmic phrases that take the listeners on a melodic and rhythmic journey. The concert usually ends with a fast paced piece that enthralls the audience. Usually, this classical piece can last for about 45 minutes, followed by a shorter semi-classical devotional piece. Desai is known for his superlative melodic improvisations and sharp sense of rhythm. With a tabla player, they have an astonishing ability to embrace, dive into ,and reinterpret traditional music.

Workshop | Origami Group Meet-Up
This event is for people to come together and share in the beautiful art of Origami--an ancient art of folding various mediums, most commonly paper. The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). Other materials often folded are fabric, wire mesh, sheet metal, tissue, thin plastic, cardboard, and straws.This group meets to teach each other new models and share paper, books, and tips. This meeting is free and open to all level of folders from beginner to advanced. There will be free paper available to share. You may choose to bring your own paper and books and just show up and fold! If you have models you would like to learn, or teach, let the organizers know, and they will try our best to accommodate.

Workshop | Painting with Words: Writing Class in a Fifth Ave Mansion
Writers and artists gather to read and discuss their writing in a supportive, relaxed and nurturing environment. Leading the group will be Harold Slazer, founder of the creative writing and acting programs at Middle Collegiate Church, as well as a playwright, screenwriter, poet, and NYFA City Artist Corps grant recipient. Carol Wierzbicki, the editor of Sunday, Middle's literary magazine, will help you fine-tune your work.
