Craig Newmark, Internet pioneer and founder of craigslist, one of the world's most widely used websites, will let you in on how he went from being a nerd and an outsider to his decision to forego big-money Silicon Valley in favor of "doing well by doing good." And he learned a few lessons along the way-basics like knowing when enough is enough, and treating people like you want to be treated. In 2011, Craig launched craigconnects, his initiative to link up everyone on the planet using the Internet to bear witness to good efforts and encourage the same behavior in others. From helping nonprofits with social media to empowering billions of people to work together, he shows no sign of stopping, planning to "boldly go where no nerd has gone before."

Opening Reception | Cross-Strait Relations, an Exhibition on the Pluralism of Chinese Identity

Ideas and experiences of “China” live across many borders. As routes of commerce and leisure between Chinese regions have become more open, artists have embraced mobility and travelling (or having multiple artistic bases) from Mainland China to Taiwan, Taiwan to Hong Kong or Singapore, and other areas with large historically Chinese populations. Through works in video, photography, installation, sound and performance, this exhibition explores the pluralism of this Chinese identity, geographically and culturally, and thereby reframes the heavily freighted term “cross-strait relations.” Curated by Arthur Ou, a photographic artist and Assistant Professor of Photography, the exhibition features work by Chen Chieh-Jen, Heman Chong, Lee Kit, Michael Lin, Hong-Kai Wang, Ming Wong and Jun Yang.

Author Reading | Sam Daley-Harris discusses his book Reclaiming Our Democracy

Most people see working to end global poverty and ensure a stable climate as a fool's errand. Add to that the Citizens United decision and the flood of money rushing into politics and the despair grows deeper. But activist and author Sam Daley-Harris has helped thousands of ordinary citizens transform from hopelessness into extraordinarily powerful advocates. In the 20th anniversary edition of Reclaiming Our Democracy released in the fall of 2013, Daley-Harris shares how he and the citizen advocacy organizations he has founded (RESULTS and the Microcredit Summit Campaign) or coached (Citizens Climate Lobby) have been leading change-makers in three global movements: 1) microfinance, 2) child survival, and 3) climate change.

Lecture | The Strategic Production of Chinese Immigrants as Model Minorities, 1948-1965

Between the end of World War II and the passage of the 1965 Immigration Act, Chinese immigrants rapidly evolved from a “yellow peril” to a “model minority.” This shift reveals how immigration laws and practices moved from ideological and legal considerations of race and national origin to preferences for individuals who were suited to America’s economic and employment needs post-1965, thus designating Chinese, and other Asian immigrants, as high achieving “model minorities.” Lecturer Madeline Y. Hsu is director of the Center for Asian American Studies and associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of Dreaming of Gold, Dreaming of Home: Transnationalism and Migration Between the United States and South China, 1882-1943.

Film | Documentary: Lynne Sachs' Your Day Is My Night (2013), Plus a Live Performance

This provocative hybrid documentary begins with the stories of a Chinatown "shift-bed" apartment, as told through dreams, movement and song. The bed transforms into a stage, revealing the collective history of the Chinese in the United States through conversations, autobiographical monologues, and theatrical improvisations. Shot on 16mm, Super 8 and HD video in the kitchens, bedrooms, wedding halls, and mahjong parlors of Chinatown, Your Day is My Night addresses issues of home and urban life. With each "performance" of their present, the characters illuminate the joys and tragedies of their past, as well as the challenges of contemporary life in New York. 65 min. The screenings will begin with a short live performance created for Beyza Boyacioglu's "Fiction-Non" series. Four cast members from the film will perform an experimental movement piece exploring the basic human need for a place to sleep.
