Raymond Pettibon’s work embraces a wide spectrum of American “high” and “low” culture, from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics, and sexuality. Taking their points of departure in the Southern California punk-rock culture of the late 1970s and 1980s and the “do-it-yourself” aesthetic of album covers, comics, concert flyers, and fanzines that characterized the movement, his drawings have come to occupy their own genre of potent and dynamic artistic commentary.

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: Last Year at Marienbad redux

An exhibition, public program and publication that together examine how fictional narratives develop over time to form accepted knowledge of people, places, events and things. Inspired by the unconventional cinematic techniques such as nonlinear narrative and repetitive language used in the 1961 film Last Year at Marienbad (directed by Alain Resnais, with screenplay by Alain Robbe-Grillet), the exhibition features works of art that deploy these and other devices-- editing, character development, plot, mise-en-scène and montage--to disrupt, challenge and conflate what is understood as fact and fiction. Artists/Participants: Jennifer Allen, Keren Cytter, Tacita Dean, Jessamyn Fiore, Dan Fox, Jens Hoffmann, Iman Issa, David Maljkovic, Ján Mančuśka, Gordon Matta-Clark, Josh Tonsfeldt, Allan Sekula & Noël Burch, and Maya Schweizer.

Opening Reception | Group Show: Death of a Cameraman

Featuring work by: Broomberg & Chanarin, Harun Farocki, Rabih Mroué, Hrair Sarkissian, Rudolf Steiner. On July 1, 2011, in the neighborhood of Karam Al Shami in Homs, Syria, a young man stands on the balcony of a residential building. He uses his cell phone to document gunfire taking place in the streets below as his camera suddenly catches sight of a gunman on an adjacent balcony. For a brief instant, the cameraman and the gunman directly face each other. A single shot is fired. The camera falls, and with the cameraman's death, image and reality collapse into one. Death of a Cameraman revolves around a moment in which the making of an image becomes a matter of life and death, with the camera functioning both as an extension of the eye and as a weapon. The exhibition explores the power of images to influence reality and alter the course of events. Are cameras weapons? Can they penetrate reality? What's at stake in the making of images? What does it mean to bear witness through them?

Opening Reception | Paintings by Allison Miller

Los Angeles-based painter Allison Miller's paintings ask viewers to be active participants. Visibly constructed and deconstructed, layer-by-layer, the resulting works are palpable sites of activity. Causing forms, space and priorities to shift and evolve, Miller links viewer to maker by maintaining a constant state of flux. Shapes that read as solid begin to ooze and melt while deep space oscillates between background and foreground. Each forced adjustment of perception makes way for the next, new reaction for both artist and viewer.

Opening Reception | Photography: Bruce Pavlow's Poster Child

Poster Child presents photographs of posters that incorporate images from popular culture - pop stars, animals, landscapes, motivational mottos - which have been reimagined and recreated by a fictitious cast of tweens, teens, and twenty-somethings. Using a readymade language of bumper stickers culled from the internet and stickers from craft and toy stores, each poster illustrates a personalized narrative and context, reflecting the thoughts and desires of the fictitious characters as well as the culture at large. The recreated posters are photographed (no Photoshop was used) and digitally printed at near actual size on watercolor paper, giving them a photorealist quality that amplifies the subsequent transformation. Image, identity and subterfuge thus meld into one.

Opening Reception | Photography: Manjari Sharma's Darshan and Shower Series

Darshan is a series that aims to photographically recreate various classical images of Gods and Goddesses pivotal to mythological stories in Hinduism. Printed on a massive scale, these photographs are presented at ClampArt in an elaborate installation that closely mimics the experience of a Hindu temple, complete with incense, lamps, and invocations. Four years back, Sharma discovered the best way to get a subject to relax in front of her camera lens was to get them in the shower. Shooting in her own apartment in Brooklyn, the artist invited friends and acquaintances over to sit for a portrait. What she eventually realized was that much of the awkwardness and anxiety of posing for a picture strangely melted away in the intimacy of a shower.

Opening Reception | Zhao Zhao's Constellations: Glass Panels Perforated with Holes and Cracks

Constellations, a series of glass panels perforated with irregular patterns of holes and cracks, originated last year when Zhao Zhao decided to conduct an experiment involving gunshots and glass, a difficult undertaking in China where with very few exceptions the ownership of firearms is illegal. Intrigued by the idea of utilizing the velocity of bullets to create works of art in a carefully controlled manner, Zhao Zhao subsequently likened the glittering glass panels to constellations, any reference to astronomy having been far from his mind at the beginning of the project.

Performance | Performance Art: Caitlin Baucom's Idle: A Gesamtkunstwerk

From the artist: "Useless, shiftless, not gainful, non linear, not turned to normal or appropriate use. Rejecting useful and appropriate functions for female bodies, Idle distorts their perceived values. In an intimate opera, three bodies perform a choreography of real time pleasures, grabbing at the imagined glamour of a woman’s body, twisting it and bringing it to life. Invaded and overpowered by music, the viewers’ own assumptions, fears, secret fantasies may be turned on them. Deep in the pleasures of female-to-female drag, the performers are real time vessels for ecstasy and power."
