Book Discussion | Soviet-Born: The Afterlives of Migration in Jewish American Fiction (online)

In 2010, when The New Yorker published a list of twenty writers under the age of forty who were "key to their generation," it included five Jewish-identified writers, two of whom--American Gary Shteyngart and Canadian David Bezmozgis--were Soviet-born. This publicity came after nearly a decade of English-language literary output by Soviet-born writers of all genders in North America. Karolina Krasuska's book traces the impact of these now numerous authors on major coordinates of the Jewish American imaginary.

Discussion | Fragments of Memory: Playwright Discusses His Works on October 7

In the aftermath of horrific events, how can fragments of memory be made into a whole? What responsibilities to remember do we owe the victims and witnesses to such events? Austrian writer Doron Rabinovici, born in Israel, explores these issues in his two stage works, The Last Witnesses and October Seventh. Both works convey both the horrors of recent history and the importance of facing atrocities in creating a future for all peoples. In conversation with Tess Lewis, Rabinovici will talk about the creation and stagings of these profoundly moving stage works.

Book Discussion | Modern Chinese Architecture: 180 Years (online)

Modern Chinese Architecture: 180 Years tells the story of the transformation of Chinese architecture from a traditional timber-frame, single-story building system with ceramic tile roofs of anonymous craftsmen to supertall skyscrapers designed by internationally acclaimed architects. From temple markets to megamalls, and from open-air stages to auditoriums and stadiums, the architectural changes mirror China's extraordinary evolution from an imperial dynasty to a people's republic and from a country with a largely rural and illiterate citizenry to at least 97% literacy, where 60 percent of the population is urban. In this live webinar, author Nancy S. Steinhardt will view the changes in Chinese architecture through five generations of architects: first, through foreigners who practiced in China; then in a first generation who studied modern architecture abroad; a third generation were the students who designed during the years of war with Japan, internal warfare, and the Cultural Revolution; in the 1980s, a next generation began to study abroad, who have been followed in this century by designers from every continent.

Book Discussion | Modern Chinese Architecture: 180 Years (online)

Nancy S. Steinhardt's book is a clear, accurate, readable survey of the dramatic transformation of Chinese architecture from 1840 through 2020. It narrates the change from a predominantly timber-frame tradition to construction in twisted steel and ecologically sensitive local materials. The book places the buildings in historical context.

Book Discussion | Telling the Bees: An Interspecies Monologue

In a bid to wean himself off social media, media scholar and cultural theorist Dominic Pettman decided to revive an ancient custom. He decided to tell the local bees of his thoughts, theories, musings, and meditations. The result was an apian journal that parses the daily news and the routines of modern life in a more sustained and reflective way than the Pavlovian posts to which we are so addicted.

Discussion | Landmarking in NYC Since 1965: The Highs and Lows (online)

Earlier this year, Village Preservation released a first-of-its-kind analysis of all landmark designations in NYC since the law first allowed them in 1965. The results were illuminating, surprising, and in terms of the recent past, extremely concerning. Documented for the first time by chronology is the vast array of buildings, parks, neighborhoods, trees, bridges, clocks, street patterns, and interior spaces that have been designated over the last six decades. Interesting patterns emerge showing when landmarking began to focus on certain kinds of places and sites, and when it began to turn away from them. But there are also disturbing trends. With 38,000 properties designated over nearly 60 years, the analysis found a profound curtailing of new designations in recent years, particularly under Mayor Adams. It also found that since the passage of a bill pushed by real estate interests in 2016, the breadth and depth of designations have also plummeted. In spite of promises of “equity” in new designations, the numbers have plummeted in every corner of the city (though some, such as “the Manhattan Core,” more than others), and the Landmarks Preservation Commission has increasingly leaned upon designations of sites facing no immediate or foreseeable danger, and often those already protected in some way, while forgoing those under more imminent threat. Village Preservation Executive Director Andrew Berman and Director of Research Dena Tasse-Winter will present the report’s meticulously detailed findings, discuss what to make of all of it with leaders from NYPAP and Friends, and open it to the public to answer questions and hear feedback.

Book Discussion | The Jazzmen: How Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie Transformed America by Larry Tye

New York Times best-selling author Larry Tye discusses his latest book, The Jazzmen: How Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie Transformed America, with acclaimed jazz vocalist, New Yorker, and music royalty Catherine Russell. From the author of Satchel and Bobby Kennedy, comes a a sweeping portrait of the longtime kings of jazz--Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie--who, born within a few years of one another, overcame racist exclusion and violence to become the most popular entertainers on the planet. This is the story of three revolutionary American musicians, the maestro jazzmen who orchestrated the chords that throb at the soul of twentieth-century America: Duke Ellington, the grandson of slaves who was christened Edward Kennedy Ellington, was a man whose story is as layered and nuanced as his name suggests and whose music transcended category; Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in a New Orleans slum so tough it was called The Battlefield and, at age seven, got his first musical instrument, a ten-cent tin horn that drew buyers to his rag-peddling wagon and set him on the road to elevating jazz into a pulsating force for spontaneity and freedom; William James Basie, too, grew up in a world unfamiliar to white fans--the son of a coachman and laundress who dreamed of escaping every time the traveling carnival swept into town, and who finally engineered his getaway with help from Fats Waller. What is far less known about these groundbreakers is that they were bound not just by their music or even the discrimination that they, like nearly all Black performers of their day, routinely encountered. Each defied and ultimately overcame racial boundaries by opening America's eyes and souls to the magnificence of their music. In the process they wrote the soundtrack for the civil rights movement. Based on more than 250 interviews, this exhaustively researched book brings alive the history of Black America in the early-to-mid 1900s through the singular lens of the country's most gifted, engaging, and enduring African-American musicians.
