The after-effects of war—hot or cold—reverberate through generations. This panel will explore how experiences of war shape even generations and societies who believe they’ve been spared. This is nothing new: as Homer warned, ‘Beware the toils of war… the huge dragnet sweeping up the world’. Can literature build antibodies by bringing those toxins to light? Featuring: Anna Baar (Austria); Joshua Cohen (United States); Isabel Fargo Cole (Germany); and Ivna Žic (Switzerland). In English.

Tour | Norway: The Legends, Ghosts and Witches of Bergen (online, livestream)

While Bergen today is a modern, progressive and safe city, in the 1500s and 1600s it was regarded as one of the most dangerous places in Scandinavia, with a murder rate comparable to that of New York City during prohibition. As various merchants were coming into Bergen after months alone at sea, they would drink lots of alcohol, fight over women, and often get into trouble. Also, during this time there were some of the largest witch trials in Scandinavia. This was all in an area that's now regarded as one of the nicest places to live! Join Emma on a tour to the dark side of Bergen: prostitution, witchcraft, murder and more. Not suitable for children.

Book Discussion | Nicolas Party: Rovine: Catalogue for an Art Show

This is a new catalogue published on the occasion of Party’s first major monographic exhibition in Europe at Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano.  Unfolding across five distinct environments in MASI’s largest exhibition hall, Rovine (meaning “ruins”) presented and gave shape to recurring motifs in Party’s work: still lives, portraits, rocky views, caves and landscapes. Across these works, noted for their chromatic inventiveness, formal precision and masterful use of trompe l’oeil, references to art history abound. The influence of artists from Arnold Bröcklin to Georgia O’Keefe to lesser known figures such as portraitist Rosalba Carriera and symbolist William Degouve Nunques course through the exhibition and publication.

Opening Reception | The House I Live In: Painting the Black Christian Church

An exhibition of new paintings by Tyler Ballon, who grew up in the New Jersey Pentecostal church, the son of pastors. His subject is the Black American home, his family, and the circle of people within the church and the local community in Greenville, Jersey City, where he spent his childhood and still lives and works.   Ballon’s imagery goes against the stereotype of people of color in the mass media. His work celebrates the love of family, partners, and one another that emanates from the Black Christian church. One of Ballon's primary subjects is the professions that members of his community were able to pursue within the white power structure, such as pastors, barbers, and hairstylists. He focuses on the careers that involve intellectual achievement and technical skill rather than the physical prowess of athletes. He strives to separate his celebration of Black community from the stereotype of slaves’ bodies. His work emphasizes love and spirituality as the path to advancement.
