While little known and rarely seen by the general public, these illuminated manuscripts count among the most luxurious works of art from the Middle Ages. Designed to edify, to entertain, and above all to embody the sacred, these manuscripts and their spectacular illuminations retain the ability to dazzle and inspire modern audiences just as they did those of the Middle Ages.

Lecture | Hollywood Sci-Fi: Flying Saucers and Soviet Scares in the 1950s (online)

Explore the amazing world of 1950s sci-fi with acclaimed documentary filmmaker Steven C Smith. Until the early 1950s, Hollywood considered science fiction stories to be kids' stuff. No studio would release an A-picture based on sci-fi material. But after WWII, that changed dramatically--and you'll find out why. Using movie classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Thing from Another World and others, you'll see how and why top filmmakers crafted sophisticated sci-fi thrillers that also served as allegories for American's fears about the Soviet Union. (The title of 1952's Red Planet Mars makes it clear who the real villains are.) You'll also explore real-life espionage inside the Manhattan Project--the building of the first atomic bomb--and hear the true story behind Nevada's mysterious Area 51, site of a supposed alien crash in 1947.

Concert | Guy Fawkes Night: Songs and Bonfire

Guy Fawkes, along with other conspiritors, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London on 5 November 1605. His attempt was foiled and he was executed. Since then bonfires have been lit on 5 November to celebrate this deliverance of democracy from conspiracy, terrorism, and violence. The practice came to Manhattan in the 1660s. Mid 17th Century liturgy will be followed by the lighting of the fire in the courtyard and the Burning of the Guy (symbolizing the rejection of terrorism in all its forms). Sausages are cooked outdoors. Wine, beer, and soft drinks are served. All are welcome. Proof of full vaccination required.

Dance Performance | The Samsara Suites: Spirituality in a Mechanized Society

A dramatic exploration of the struggle to seek spiritual peace within a mechanized, capitalist society. The musical score is an exciting contemporary classical work that will be performed by a string quartet, three percussionists, and a pianist playing an analog Moog synthesizer and a digital sampling keyboard. Also being performed will be an experimental musical work titled Evolution. Based on Indeterminate musical theories, the work mixes composed elements with improvisations within a fixed set of rules. The piece will not be rehearsed by the musicians and could sound very different each time it is performed. The process could create a work of musical beauty, or become a complete disaster. You wont know until the performance happens.
