City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Poetry Reading | Poet-Linc featuring Girls Write Now

Girls Write Now is the first organization in the United States, and the only one on the East coast, to combine mentoring and writing instruction within the context of all-girl programming. Since 1998, they have given more than 3,500 at-risk girls from New York City’s public high schools access to a supportive mentoring relationship, a safe space to share ideas, and an intergenerational writing community. Their rigorous selection process, respect for each relationship’s singularity, and integrated supports have led to rich, revelatory mentee writing across a variety of genres and to a signal set of accomplishments. They have seen over 90% retention rates within the year, and return rates for nonseniors of 80%. While half of New York City’s youth fail to complete high school, 100% of GWN’s seniors graduate and move on to college—bringing with them awards, scholarships, a new sense of confidence and new skills.

Book Signing | Oliver Sacks signs copies of his book Hallucinations

Have you ever seen something that wasn’t really there? Heard someone call your name in an empty house? Sensed someone following you and turned around to find nothing? Hallucinations don’t belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. People with migraines may see shimmering arcs of light or tiny, Lilliputian figures of animals and people. People with failing eyesight, paradoxically, may become immersed in a hallucinatory visual world.

Screening | Documentary: Ken Burns, David McMahon & Sarah Burns' The Central Park Five (2012): Wrongly Accused of a Notorious Crime

In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of brutally beating and raping a white woman in Central Park. New York Mayor Ed Koch called it the "crime of the century" and it remains to date one of the biggest media stories of our time. The five each spent between 6 and 13 years in prison before a shocking confession from a serial rapist and DNA evidence proved their innocence. Set against a backdrop of a decaying city beset by violence and racial tension, The Central Park Five tells the story of how five lives were upended by the rush to judgment by police, a sensationalist media and a devastating miscarriage of justice. 119 min. Followed by a Q&A with co-director Sarah Burns.
