Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

Discussion | Golden Age for Soviet Culture?

Between the end of the civil war and the rise of Stalin, the culture of the Soviet Union went through an extraordinarily creative and productive phase. As researchers delve into the archives more and more is coming to light about this extraordinary era. Advances took place in literature, the arts, social theory and the sciences. Some of its most creative forces even managed to produce work in the era of the purges that followed that has not been known until recently. This seminar and panel discussion explores the links between works produced in this era, and also in addition what enduring value some of it may have beyond historical interest. Panelists: Inessa Medzibovskaya, associate professor and co-chair of Literary Studies McKenzie Wark, professor, Culture and Media Evgeni V. Pavlov, professor of Philosophy, Metropolitan State College of Denver

Jazz | Lou Pallo, Guitarist with The Les Paul Trio

Lou Pallo (born Louis Oropallo on October 1, 1934) is an American jazz guitarist and vocalist, best known for the three decades he played in The Les Paul Trio. Lou was raised in Haledon, NJ, where his father played guitar and his sister was a concert pianist, schooled at Julliard. His Italian family, who routinely played music together under the backyard grapevine, ingrained Lou’s love for music at an early age. Inspired by the sounds of the guitar, accordion and mandolin, Pallo picked up a guitar and taught himself chords, then shortly after began to take private lessons. His guitar heroes were Les Paul and Tony Mottola.

For readers of Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, or The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, the lives of the three Brontë sisters are endlessly fascinating. In this presentation, explore the elements that helped to create their legend: the lonely parsonage on the Yorkshire Moors, the dissolute brother, the obsessive juvenilia, the childhood tragedies, the conflict between domestic duty and creativity, the illnesses and early deaths--and try to determine how these factors contributed to the amazing adult poems and novels.

Tour | The High Line Sunset Tour

The area around the HighLine Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Gallery Talk | Guided Tour of Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan

A major exhibition that explores the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan, the crowning cultural achievement of the sixth-century Northern Qi dynasty (550-77 CE). Carved into the mountains of northern China, the temples were once home to a magnificent array of sculptures—monumental Buddhas, divine attendant figures, and crouching monsters framed by floral motifs. These statues are among the finest embodiments of Chinese Buddhist sculpture and are seminal to our understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhist style and iconography.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Bjarne Melgaard's Engaging Chaos and Seeking the Sublime

New York-based Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard is a prolific, profane, and much admired polymath. In addition to paintings, drawings, films, furniture, and objects, he has created a thicket of novels. These exploded accretions of words and ideas, with their fevers of graphic violence, explicit sadomasochistic sex and unexpected poignancy, do not adhere to the conventions of dignified narrative. For Melgaard, the novel is a site where ideas both good and bad can proliferate freely, and where attention follows the upended logic of what actually takes place instead of what ideally should happen. Melgaard steadfastly refuses to locate the frontier between reality and fantasy.

Author Reading | Colm Tóibín reads from his book The Testament of Mary

Given that he wrote a collection of short stories entitled Mothers and Sons, it's not surprising that Colm Tóibín has devoted a whole novel to the most famous pair in history. But his Mother of God is far from the sorrowing and yet accepting figure familiar to most of us: instead, Tóibín conjures a woman who continues to grieve angrily many years after her son's crucifixion. Furious with Jesus' disciples and unwilling to participate in the version of history being assembled by the gospel writers, Tóibín's Mary is a powerful, unsparing figure— typical of her creator's singular imagination.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
