Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

City Walk | Midtown Manhattan Tour

Arguably the world's most valuable, busiest and most crowded pieces of real estate, Midtown Manhattan is what most visitors think of when they think of New York City. Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

City Walk | Lower East Side Food Tour

Where can you find a historic Synagogue next to a storefront Buddhist Temple, trendy boutiques that sit comfortably beside decades-old "Mom and Pop" shops, or tenament apartments interspersed between luxury high rise condos? Look no further than the Lower East Side to discover America's great Melting Pot. Once an insular slum with the one of the world's highest population densities and lowest life expectancies, its streets tell the tales of immigrant struggles and rags to riches stories. Known for a time as Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), this neighboorhood was also the Jewish ward, home today to a mix of foreign-born Latinos and Asians as well as students and hipsters. The result is one of New York City's most dynamic and interesting neighborhoods and a food lover's paradise.

Author Reading | Lesley Dill discusses her book I Had a Blueprint of History

Lesley Dill collaborated with master papermaker Paul Wong to custom design unique watermarks and pigments for each page of this limited edition book. Dill also worked directly with master printer Peter Kruty over a period of three years to letterpress print 31 pages of imagery that illuminate the poem Blueprint, by Tom Sleigh. Each page is a distinctive print with binding designed to allow the pages of the book to be taken apart and framed individually or in layers, which accentuate the use of translucent pages to build the artist’s imagery. Publisher Sue Gosin collaborated with the creative team throughout the project to create this limited edition of 30 artists books.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.

Workshop | Intro Class: Calming the Spirit: Stress Reduction with Chinese Herbs and Practices

With Drew DiVittorio. Over the course of centuries traditional Chinese medicine developed the use of specific exercises, foods, herbal formulas, and meditation methods to address a wide range of ailments and to foster overall emotional and spiritual health. In this class, we will draw from this rich tradition to learn some simple but powerfully effective techniques to reduce stress and “calm the spirit.” In each session we will practice ancient Taoist movement, breathing, and meditative exercises that have recently been scientifically proven to help control blood pressure, reduce weight, balance energy, and calm the nervous system. Even minutes a day of practice can confer noticeable results. We will also explore herbs, foods and specific exercises that can help alleviate such conditions as depression, insomnia and anxiety as well as help us release negative emotions.

Theater | Fen by Caryl Churchill, a Student Play

Fen exposes the harsh struggles of the women and landworkers of England’s Fen Country, as it delves into their private lives and dreams. At the center of the play is Val, who wants more than anything to escape from the life she and her family have known for generations. She decides to escape the Fens to start a new life with another man, leaving her husband and two daughters. However, she soon finds herself struggling with the emotional implications of following her desires and in the tragic position of having to choose between her children and her lover – neither of which she wants to live without.

Performance | Comedy: Mike Brown Solo Improv Extravaganza

Let’s be honest. The Mike Brown Solo Improv Extravaganza is pretty much like other improv troupe that you’ll discover along life’s path…with one exception: the show is completely improvised by one person. That’s right, improv fans! An entire improv troupe has just been reduced to a single person, which means that all characters discovered in the scene are portrayed through the eyes of one improviser.
