Opening Reception | A Non-Objective Couple: An Art Show by Sonia Gechtoff and James Kelly

*Also Opening May 11: “Sonia Gechtoff – Paper Paintings” May 11 – June 17 | Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art | 40 East 63rd Street, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10065 The Anita Shapolsky Gallery is pleased to present “A Non-Objective Couple”, an exhibition featuring husband and wife team Sonia Gechtoff and James Kelly. This exhibition features some of the remaining works of these artists’ oeuvres. As prime examples of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism’s raw, unique influence, Gechtoff and Kelly’s experimental approaches are exemplary of the collective coolness of the Bay Area. A focus on smooth, otherworldly strokes permeate their works, in contrast to the faster movements and more vibrant palette of New York, where much of the cultural dialogue came from and where they eventually settled. Inspired by poetry, particularly by their contemporaries of the Beat generation, Gechtoff, Kelly, and their peers viewed painting as the visual component of literature, yet unlike their New York counterparts, emphasized this duality through allusions to distant figuration, swirling motifs, spiritual encounters, and visual representations of verbal expression in their paintings. Originally from Philadelphia, Gechtoff and Kelly married in 1953 in San Francisco and moved to a loft on the legendary Fillmore Street, where contemporaries Jay DeFeo, Wally Hedrick, and Michael McClure also lived. They were active participants in the Beat scene, and exhibited at King Ubu Gallery on 3119 Fillmore Street, one of the several locations where the heartbeat of the scene pulsed.

Opening Reception | Painting Paris: Works by Shirley Goldfarb

To mention Shirley Goldfarb is to conjure an image of Paris, a city she loved deeply and called home for 26 years. In 1953, she and her husband Gregory Masurovsky moved from Manhattan to Paris, where, like so many others from their generation, they survived on the GI Bill. Goldfarb adopted a purely abstract style, breaking completely with the figurative Expressionism that had characterized her academic training in New York.

Author Reading | Hettie Jones reads from her book Love, H.

As letters have largely become a thing of the past, conveying a kind of intimacy that is increasingly hard to achieve, Love H: The Letters of Helene Dorn and Hettie Jones, a selection from the 40-year correspondence between poet, writer, and teacher Hettie Jones and sculptor Helene Dorn, is a treasure trove of essential social history. While these letters explore the battlegrounds of women’s rights, tenants’ rights, marriage, motherhood, and a shared past that kept the two irrevocably connected in the Beat bohemia of the 1960s, they are also the portrait of deep and abiding friendship. In celebration of the publication of the book, Hettie Jones will read from the letters and present her side of the story. She will be joined by Professor Claudia Moreno Parsons of LaGuardia Community College in a discussion of the importance of letters and friendship in the documentation of social history. The discussion will be followed by Q & A.

Author Reading | Samuel Heilman reads from his book Who Will Lead Us? The Story of Five Hasidic Dynasties in America

Hasidism has had an extraordinary revival since it was nearly decimated in the Holocaust and repressed in the Soviet Union. Hasidic communities, now settled primarily in North America and Israel, have reversed the losses they suffered and are growing exponentially. With powerful attachments to the past, mysticism, community, and charismatic leadership, Hasidism is the opposite of contemporary Western culture, which is built on the ideals of constant change, secular rationality, and individual achievement. Yet Hasidism has thrived in the Zionist state and the democratic countries of the West. Why? And how? Samuel Heilman's latest book finds the answers to these questions in the fascinating story of five contemporary Hasidic dynasties and their handling of the delicate issue of leadership and succession. Prof. Heilman, recognized as a foremost expert on modern Jewish Orthodoxy, will discuss the book, which provides outsiders with the essential guide to continuity in the Hasidic world.

Compiled together in a book, Suburbia conveys a kind of optimism mixed with vulnerability; a class of people searching for "a better life" while burdened with the responsibility of fulfilling the mythological narrative of the American Dream.
